SeeCHANGE, a National Lottery Funded health inequalities project has partnered with The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough to shine a light on homelessness by focusing on the real people behind the label. The Podcast project aims to challenge perceptions by sharing the true, often unheard stories of individuals who have experienced homelessness-highlighting not just where they are today, but what came before.
Over three months, Cheryl spent time building trust, listening, and getting to know each person, allowing their stories to emerge naturally and authentically. This work has given participants a platform to share their voice, their history, and their humanity.
The series is produced by Beckview Studios and is available on all major podcast platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Android Podcasts.
Cheryl said āSpending time with the people, all of them, the clients, volunteers, and staff has been one of the biggest honours of my life. The care, love, respect, and practical help apparent in this amazing, local charity is inspiring and life changing. Not only for those who access the services but for anyone who is privileged enough to meet, and hang out with, and get to know everyone as individuals. Unique, worldly, interesting, and wonderful. At SeeCHANGE, we are dedicated to building inclusive communities - and this project is an important step in helping others see homelessness through a more compassionate and truthful lens.
The Rainbow Centre has been supporting vulnerable people in Scarborough for almost 28 years, helping the homeless as well as those in crisis. The Centre offers a variety of essential services including: a foodbank, cafƩ, hot showers, laundry facilities, access to clothing, toiletries, and bedding, start-up packs for new homes, and a debt advice service. On average we provide food for around 1,000 people each month, and in 2024 carried out almost 20,000 critical interventions.
Mike Lynskey, Operations Manager at The Rainbow Centre said āCollaborating with Cheryl from SeeChange on this project has been truly inspiring. At the Rainbow Centre, we work closely with our homeless clients every day and feel we know their lives well. But Cheryl brought a fresh perspective by spending genuine, unhurried time with them and listening to their stories. Turning these stories into a podcast has shone a light on the real people behind the word āhomelessā and has given their voices a wider platform.
