🚨 Important Notice - AVIAN INFLUENZA 🚨

Given the latest update from the government on the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in England, we’re making some temporary changes to our intake process to protect the wild birds we rescue and prevent the spread of disease.

πŸ“Ή New requirement for admissions
Effective immediately, we ask that a short video of the bird you’re bringing in is submitted before we accept admission. This helps us assess whether:
- the bird is showing any signs of illness or distress
- we’re confident on-site biosecurity measures can be met
- we can safely care for the bird without risking other patients.

βœ… What to include in your video/message
- A clear view of the bird
- Any noticeable symptoms: e.g., lethargy, discharge, abnormal feathers.
- The environment it’s been found in (garden, pond edge, woodland etc).
- Your contact details and how long you’ve had it.

πŸ™ We appreciate your cooperation
We know this is an extra step, but it helps us continue our rescue work safely and effectively. Thank you for helping ensure a safe environment for all the birds in our care.
If you have any questions or need help filming the clip, message us here and we’ll talk you through it.

πŸ•ŠοΈ Update on the Collared Doves πŸ•ŠοΈ

A while back, two young collared doves were brought into the rescue. They were weak, unsure, and needed a bit of help to get back on their feet. πŸ’ͺ

One made a quick recovery and has already been released. It’s awesome watching a bird take off strong and steady after a rough start. πŸ•ŠοΈ

The second dove had a tougher time. He’d lost several of his flight feathers and wasn’t ready to fly just yet. After some time, good food, and care, his feathers have now almost fully grown back and he’s building up his strength again.

He’s flying well now and will soon be ready to return to the wild where he belongs. πŸŒ…

Every release is a reminder of why we do this, giving wildlife a proper second chance.

πŸ•Š Pigeon Progress Update! πŸ•Š

This lovely pigeon was handed in to us at Vets for Pets Grimsby after being found with a small wound on his back and quite a bit of feather loss. After some rest, care, and plenty of good food, his wound has fully healed and his feathers are growing back beautifully! πŸ’ͺ

He’s well on the mend and will soon be ready to take to the skies again. 🌀

A massive thank you for the donation of cages today. Your support means more space and comfort for the animals in our care. 🀩

Bonfire Night can be a dangerous time for our wild friends, especially hedgehogs, mice, and birds looking for cosy places to shelter. Before lighting your bonfire, please take a few simple steps to help keep them safe:

🌿 Build on the Day – Hedgehogs love to hide in piles of logs and leaves. Only build your bonfire on the day you plan to light it, and keep materials off the ground until then.

πŸ”¦ Check Before You Light – Use a torch and a stick to gently check for any sleeping wildlife before lighting your bonfire. Listen for rustling or movement inside.

πŸ”₯ Light from One Side Only – This gives any hidden animals a chance to escape if they’ve snuck in.

🏑 Provide Safe Alternatives – Leave out food and water away from the noise. A quiet corner of your garden can be a safe retreat for frightened animals.

πŸŽ† Keep Fireworks Wildlife-Friendly – Avoid loud fireworks where possible and stick to quieter, eco-friendly options if you can, or alternatively visit a local display. This will not only help our wildlife, but also domestic animals and even people!

Let’s make sure Bonfire Night stays fun for us and safe for the wildlife we share our gardens with πŸ’š

πŸ¦” Winter is coming β€” help our hedgehogs!

Hedgehogs need to fatten up before hibernation, however finding food can be a bit tricky this time of year. You can help by leaving out meaty cat or dog food (not fish-based), or some hedgehog specific food, as well as a shallow dish of water.

Skip the milk and bread, and keep a wild corner in your garden for shelter and insects. Every small act helps!

As it starts to get chillier and darker, it's a good time to start supplementing your garden birds with some extra food and fats.

Seeds and grains like millet, oats or sunflower seeds are always welcome and you can even give garden birds some of your leftovers!

Cooked pasta, rice, boiled potatoes or cheese are all great additions to your bird table.

This wood pigeon was handed into us at Vets for Pets Grimsby after being found with a wound on its back. Luckily the injury is small and treatable.

For now, the pigeon is resting safely with us where it can recover without stress. We’ve cleaned the wound, provided pain relief, and made sure it has access to plenty of food and water. Over the next few days, rest and care will be key to helping it regain its strength.

Wood pigeons may be common, but every single one plays an important part in our ecosystem, and every life matters. With some time and healing, we hope this bird will soon be strong enough to return to the skies.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our work with wildlife. 🐣
