Christmas Eve in 1914
Stars were burning, burning bright
And all along the Western Front
Guns were lying still and quiet.
Men lay dozing in the trenches,
In the cold and in the dark,
And far away behind the lines
A village dog began to bark.

Some lay thinking of their families,
Some sang songs while others were quiet
Rolling f**s and playing brag
To while away that Christmas night.
But as they watched the German trenches
Something moved in No Man’s Land
And through the dark came a soldier
Carrying a white flag in his hand.

Then from both sides men came running,
Crossing into No Man’s Land,
Through the barbed-wire, mud and shell holes,
Shyly stood there shaking hands.
Fritz brought out ci**rs and brandy,
Tommy brought corned beef and f**s,
Stood there talking, singing, laughing,
As the moon shone on No Man’s Land.

Christmas Day we all played football
In the mud of No Man’s Land;
Tommy brought some Christmas pudding,
Fritz brought out a German band.
When they beat us at football
We shared out all the grub and drink
And Fritz showed me a faded photo
Of a dark-haired girl back in Berlin.

Hundreds gathered in villages and towns across Northumberland to pay their respects and remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday.

I am hugely grateful to Deputy Lieutenant Commander Andy Collier for representing His Majesty this morning and laying a wreath on behalf of The King. Cdr Collier said the numbers exceeded those of last year. ‘This is a parade which continues to build in support which is exactly what the organisers have strived for.’ There were lovely refreshments following the short service where Cdr Collier thanked everyone present for rekindling support in remembrance in Seghill. Congratulations to all involved.

He Died on the 29th September 1917 Shortly after the Battle of the Menin Road Ridge, Third Battle of Ypres what is commonly known today as Passchendaele and is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium.

Obituary, Primitive Methodist Magazine 1918:
Private Ernest Slinn, of the K.O.Y.L.I.. has been killed in France. He was a Primitive Methodist of the third generation, and a devoted worker in the church at Seaton Delaval. With a bright and cheerful disposition and a studious mind, his life held the promise of splendid service. His last letter to the writer records the joy and profit with which he had read in the trenches Ruskin's "Crown of Wild Olive'" He was a loyal member of the C.E. Society, and his contributions to the programme were always original and suggestive.

The Sunday school called forth his best efforts, and all the children loved him.

He hated everything for which militarism stands, and the soldier's tasks were always irksome to him. We mourn with the widowed mother, who has lost a devoted son. (J.G. Soulsby)

Williams Son was born on the 30th June 1918. He named him after his Brother,
Ernest.
