PROM or Prolonged/pre-labour rupture of membranes is when your waters release at term (37 weeks and over) and your contractions don’t immediately start.
Guidelines changed from recommending induction after 72 hours, to 48 hours, to 24 hours, to the current guideline of induction immediately or within 24 hours.
Although guidelines are to induce immediately, this is purely a recommendation and you don’t have to agree. The vast majority of people will labour within 24 hours, and the policy to induce immediately could mean inducing unnecessarily because we failed to wait. Research backs waiting up to but not over 4 days. However, the risk of infection does increase with time, particularly maternal infection, and you should watch and wait for signs such as fever, and baby’s movements.
