📚 SCHOOL PRAISED FOR ITS APPROACH TO MATHS

A North Sheffield school has been recognised for its approach to teaching maths to young children.

Royd Nursery Infant School has received a ‘Commitment to Quality’ award from Sheffield City Council’s Early Years Quality and Access team.

The award recognises the school’s use of ‘Active Maths for Engagement and Inclusion’ – an approach involving practical maths activities both indoors and outdoors, tailored to children's individual needs and stages of development.

The council team praised the way Active Maths is embedded into teaching at Royd, helping keep children engaged while supporting their move into Key Stage 1.

The school has now been asked to share its approach with other early years providers across Sheffield as an example of good practice.

Miss Brook, Early Years Foundation Stage Lead, said schools had previously visited Royd to see its teaching methods and that this would continue.

Deputy Headteacher Mr Sly said the school was “delighted” to receive another award recognising the quality of education provided to its pupils.

The latest recognition follows Royd’s most recent Ofsted inspection, when its Early Years provision was rated ‘Outstanding’. ⭐

The school said the award reflected the hard work of its Foundation Stage team and the high standards of early years education at Royd.

🔧 18 NEW APPRENTICES JOIN SHEFFIELD FORGEMASTERS

Sheffield Forgemasters has welcomed 18 new apprentices as the company continues its huge £1.3 billion investment programme.

The new recruits will work towards professional qualifications while receiving fully funded training and earning a salary.

The 2026 intake includes apprenticeships in metallurgy, CNC programming, maintenance, project management, steel melting, machining and inspection.

Around 700 people applied for the 18 positions, highlighting the strong demand for skilled engineering careers.

Apprentices currently make up around 10% of Sheffield Forgemasters’ workforce, with the company employing approximately 780 people.

The Ministry of Defence-owned company is undergoing a major transformation, including a new 13,000-tonne forge line and a 30,000-square-metre machining facility.

The investment is intended to boost Forgemasters’ ability to manufacture complex components for the UK's defence programme, including the new SSN-AUKUS submarines.

People & Culture Director Laura Hooper said the company was “delighted” to welcome the latest apprentices, adding that the investment was creating opportunities for young people while helping develop the skilled workforce needed for the future.

Sheffield Forgemasters produces high-integrity forgings and castings for industries including defence, marine, civil nuclear, renewables, steel processing and power generation.

☀️ SOLAR PANELS COULD BE COMING TO SIX NORTH SHEFFIELD SCHOOLS

Six schools across North Sheffield could be getting solar panels as part of plans to increase renewable energy and cut energy costs.

The proposed Solar on Schools programme includes:

📍 Deepcar St John’s Church of England Junior School
📍 Ecclesfield Primary School
📍 High Green Primary School
📍 Coit Primary School
📍 Marlcliffe Community Primary School
📍 Royd Nursery and Infant School

Around 21 maintained schools across Sheffield could benefit from the first phase of the scheme.

The panels are expected to operate for at least 25 years, with schools using the electricity they generate to help reduce their energy bills. Any surplus power could be exported to the national grid.

The council estimates the programme could save around 115 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

And it won't just be about generating electricity. Schools are also expected to receive education sessions using their solar installations to help pupils learn about renewable energy, climate change and energy use. 🌱

The scheme would be funded through money raised by the Sheffield Climate Investment Bond, which allowed local people to invest in tackling climate change.

The plans will be considered by Sheffield City Council's Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee on Wednesday, September 16.

A second round of the Climate Investment Bond is planned for December, potentially opening the door for more Sheffield schools to get solar panels.

Young people offered funding for climate projects
Young people across South Yorkshire are being invited to apply for grants of up to £4,500 to turn their environmental ideas into reality.
The Youth Climate Action Fund is offering grants of between £700 and £4,500 to people aged 15 to 24 who want to make a difference in their local communities.
Projects could include improving a local green space, setting up a community environmental initiative, developing green skills or helping communities prepare for climate change.
Funding is available across three areas:
Nature and green spaces
Green skills and careers
Water and climate resilience
South Yorkshire is one of 300 cities and regions around the world taking part in the latest phase of the Youth Climate Action Fund, backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Applications must be made through, or alongside, a youth-led or youth-serving organisation such as a school, college, university, youth group or community organisation.
However, projects must be designed and led by young people.
Applications open today (September 10) and close on October 23, with successful projects expected to be announced in November.
Projects must be completed by April 15, 2027.
The scheme is being administered by the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.
South Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor Chris Read said the fund would give young people the opportunity to turn their ideas into action while developing skills and experience.

🎨 What does ‘Structure’ mean to you?

Buildings? Bones? Blankets? Or something completely unexpected?

More than 60 artists are coming together at Cupola Gallery in Hillsborough for a new exhibition exploring the many different interpretations of ‘Structure’ – and from the preview, visitors can expect plenty of surprises.

The exhibition brings together an eclectic mix of sculpture, ceramics, painting, printmaking and mixed media, with artists given complete freedom to decide what ‘Structure’ means to them.

👀 Expect everything from ceramic towers and organic forms to paintings inspired by urban and Brutalist architecture.

There are also some more unusual creations – including soft sculpture featuring body parts, a skull wearing bejewelled headphones, and a chair transformed into a figure!

The exhibition also explores the materials and processes behind the finished artworks, showing how artists have built, shaped and assembled their pieces.

Cupola Gallery director Karen Sherwood said the artists were given “free rein” to interpret the theme – and the result is an exhibition bringing together work from recent graduates to established artists.

🚨 Pen*stone Paramount redevelopment plans shelved

Plans to redevelop Pen*stone Town Hall, including the Paramount Cinema, have been stopped by Barnsley Council.

The council says it has taken the “difficult decision” because it needs to ensure every pound of public money delivers the greatest possible benefit for residents across the borough.

The decision puts on hold plans that had aimed to improve and transform the historic town centre building.

Barnsley Council says it will continue working with Pen*stone Town Council, local elected members and other key partners to find the best way forward for Pen*stone.

The authority says wider opportunities for the town will also remain under review.

It said future investment would be focused on projects where it can have the greatest impact and deliver the best value for residents.

The council added that it remains committed to investing in communities across Barnsley.
