Dalton Smith crowned WBC World Champion in Brooklyn

Sheffield has a new world champion.

Dalton Smith has been crowned WBC super-lightweight world champion after a stunning fifth-round knockout win over Subriel Matias at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The 28-year-old produced a fearless performance, stopping the defending champion in round five and handing Matias the first knockout defeat of his career. The referee waved it off after a huge right hand left Matias unable to continue.

Smith went into the fight as the underdog but chose to meet Matias head-on, trading power punches and refusing to back down. His persistence paid off in dramatic fashion as he dropped the champion and sealed a famous victory on the world stage.

The win takes Smith’s professional record to 19-0 and makes him Britain’s latest world boxing champion, adding his name to Sheffield’s proud boxing history alongside the likes of Prince Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson, Clinton Woods and Kell Brook.

Speaking after the fight, Smith said:
“Do not let anybody tell you you can’t achieve your dreams. If you work hard, you can do it.”

Back in Sheffield, celebrations have been pouring in for the fighter, who walked out in Brooklyn to Arctic Monkeys’ When The Sun Goes Down, proudly flying the flag for his home city.

Big nights could now lie ahead, with potential title defences and even a possible homecoming fight being talked about.

I wonder what they have bin doing? LEAVE YOUR BINS OUT!!

Message from people in charge of bins!

Due to the snow and ice preventing safe access for our collection vehicles and crews, we will be unable to complete all bin collections due this week.

If your collection has not yet taken place, please continue to leave it out until it has been emptied.

Collections will be taking place this weekend to recover collections that have not yet taken place.

Due to the widespread and prolonged disruption caused by the snow and ice, it will take time to recover all of the delayed collections.

We apologise for any inconvenience, and we thank you for your patience.
