When labour history is told, women are often reduced to footnotes.

The reality is different.

Women have led strikes, organised communities, challenged employers and transformed movements.

The task isn't to rediscover women in struggle. It's to tell the story properly.

Join us this Thursday in Brighton for the launch of A Woman's Place Is in the Struggle β€” a new project by Judith Cazorla celebrating the women who've always fought back, from Dagenham to Orgreave and beyond.

This year's Orgreave Anniversary March and Rally took place at a pivotal moment. With the Orgreave Inquiry now underway, questions that campaigners, miners and their families have pursued for decades are finally being examined in public.

The demand is no longer to simply remember what happened, but to ensure that the historical record is fully opened, scrutinised and preserved for future generations.

Among those attending was Manifesto Press author Hilary Cave, whose book, Recollections of a Miners' Strike, offers a powerful account of the struggle from the perspective of those who lived it.

Recollection of the Great Miners Strike - author Hilary Cave explains how important it is for workers to organise and take up the struggle. Without opposition, the government and employers will continue to impoverish our communities, asset strip our public services and stitch insecurity into the very fabric of our lives.

Manifesto Press has launched the chapter covering Orgreave, taken from Hilary’s book and read by her, as a free download on Bandcamp, which you can listen to here

Manifesto Press backs author Hilary Cave

As the Government Inquiry into policing of the Miners' Strike examines the violence at Orgreave, Manifesto Press confirms that its author, Hilary Cave, has submitted her book 'Recollections of the Miners' Strike' as evidence. Hilary was present. She is an authoritative witness.

A worker, not a campaigner, she took a day's holiday to travel to the plant on a miners' bus. That bus was stopped short of its secret destination – police appeared to know the plan in advance.

At Orgreave, Hilary witnessed police assaulting pickets from the start, often on the head. Riot shields and drawn truncheons faced unarmed pickets. Retreating miners standing still offered no threat – yet police parted to let mounted officers gallop through, clubbing fleeing men. A man with a fractured skull was taken from hospital back to police cells.

Hilary Cave is a primary source. Manifesto Press has urged the Inquiry to treat her evidence with full seriousness.

STRIKE! An event that has caught public attention. The General Strike centenary proves that history does not stand still. 100 years ago the miners faced a concerted employer and government assault. Today, that assault - a product of the profiteering, waste and greed at the heart of the capitalist system - is affecting everyone, everywhere.

Read more in Strike! Selected writings from Tom Mann, JT Murphy, Tom Wintringham and Harry Pollitt, written in the midst of the action. With a foreword by new Communist Party general secretary Alex Gordon.
