Ideas need places to meet.

That's why festivals matter.

Not simply as places to sell books — but as places to exchange ideas, build solidarity and imagine what comes next. A book can carry an idea thousands of miles. But putting an idea into print is only the beginning.

It needs a reader. A conversation. Someone to question it, share it, argue with it or carry it into another space.

That's part of what makes political festivals and gatherings so important.

Over the past fortnight, the Manifesto Press team have been at Avante! in Portugal, meeting readers, publishers and comrades from across the world. Then on to Fête de l'Humanité in France for another weekend of books, politics, culture and international exchange.

Because behind every bookstall is something bigger than selling books.

TODAY AT FÊTE DE L’HUMANITÉ 🇫🇷📚

A unique cultural record spanning the Weimar Republic to British exile comes to the Village du Livre today.

At 3.45pm, Anita Halpin — founder and President of the Hans Hess Foundation, daughter of Hans Hess and veteran of the British labour movement — will present the newly reproduced Hess Family Guestbooks, in conversation with Victor of Éditions Manifeste!

The culmination of a two-year collaboration between the Bauhaus-Archiv, Hans Hess Foundation and Manifesto Press, the richly illustrated 400-page volume reproduces the two original Guestbooks in full.

The Hess family — left-leaning, of Jewish heritage, and central to German art and architecture between the Russian Revolution and the N**i rise — hosted a remarkable circle of the avant-garde. From Kandinsky, Feininger and Klee to Kurt Weill and Charlie Chaplin, contributors left behind original sketches, paintings, poems and musical scores.

The two original Guestbooks, now held by the Bauhaus-Archiv, document a world forced into exile and opposition.
Anita will discuss the project, its history and key themes, followed by a Q&A.

Day 2 at Avante! 🇵🇹

Another day at Festa do Avante! means more books, more discussions, more music — and a few unexpected encounters along the way.

From an unmissable parade by Coletivo Artístico Os Gigantes and their roaming stilt performers (andas / pernas de pau), to martial arts demonstrations, packed conversations at the Festa do Livro and another night of music — including Yuri da Cunha bringing the crowd together with sounds of solidarity.

And, of course, plenty more Manifesto books finding their way into the festival.

But Avante! is only one stop.

Our team are now heading onwards to France, where Manifesto will have another stall and some of our authors will take to the literary stage at Fête de l’Humanité.

Meanwhile, back home, the whole Manifesto team — editors, proofreaders, designers, social media specialists, staff and volunteers — is gearing up for another major moment: the launch of Volume Four in the Hans Hess series.

Launching this October with special events at the Frankfurt Book Fair and in Berlin in conjunction with the Bauhaus-Archiv, before coming to Britain for an ‘Art for All, All for Art’ day in January.

From books and debate to art, music and international solidarity — onwards.
