Continuing The Little Book of Sheffield 2025’s journey across the city, today we’re leaving the indies of Hillsborough behind and hopping on the tram down to Kelham Island.

Once the beating heart of Sheffield’s steel industry, Kelham is now – according to Time Out magazine, at least – one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.

While the bones of its industrial past are still proudly on show in the area’s architecture, these days those former factories house some of the best bars, restaurants and creative spaces the city has to offer.

“I went from playing football with Billy Sharp at secondary to a practice room with Alex Turner and Matt Helders at college. Only in Sheffield, eh?”

Our pal and fellow Light Sessions collaborator has seen (and soundtracked) some things. As the drummer of a little band called Milburn and the recently revived Bromheads Jacket, he’s got stories from one of the most exciting eras in Sheffield music.
