Vertebrate Publishing A crack team of climbers, cyclists, walkers, designers & photographers At Vertebrate Publishing we publish books to inspire adventure.
(1)

It’s our rule that the only books we publish are those that we’d want to read or use ourselves. We endeavour to bring you beautiful books that stand the test of time and that you’ll be proud to have on your bookshelf for years to come. The Peak District was the inspiration behind our first books. Our offices are situated on its doorstep, minutes away from world-class climbing, biking and hillwalki

ng. We’re driven by our own passion for the outdoors, for exploration, and for the natural world; it’s this passion that we want to share with our readers. We aim to inspire everyone to get out there. We want to connect readers – young and old – with the outdoors and the positive impact it can have on well-being. We think it’s particularly important that young people get outside and explore the natural world, something we support through our publishing programme. As well as publishing award-winning new books, we’re working to make available many out-of-print classics in both print and digital formats. These are stories that we believe are unique and significant – we want to make sure that they continue to be shared and enjoyed for generations to come.

Summits to bag

Chinley Churn
Mount Famine
South Head
Brown Knoll

With fantastic views throughout, this route initially looks over the green valley above Chinley before crossing to explore high moorland on the opposite side. After a short but steep climb to the Ethel at Chinley Churn (the trig is on private land in the neighbouring farmer’s field), follow Cracken Edge above the rutted landscape of a 19th-century quarry that produced slate for local floors and roofs. A further Ethel at Mount Famine is closely followed by South Head, before striking out over the moor towards Edale and the trig and Ethel at Brown Knoll.

A long section of flagstones gives a firm footing through an expanse of blanket bog to the far end of Rushup Edge, where it joins the Pennine Bridleway. This pretty trail winds its way over hill and dale, before dropping back down to Chinley. A lovely late spring route when the hawthorn is out in the valleys and cotton grass flowering on the moors.

🌿 48 Hours in the Lake District 🌿

Go check out our adventure here https://bit.ly/45rsoC0

We spent the weekend camping in one of the most beautiful corners of the UK — and squeezed in a full dose of adventure.

After a Friday evening drive, we set up our little tent under the stars and woke up to crisp mountain air and big plans. Saturday was all about hiking: we followed Route 39 from Peak Bagging Wainwrights and managed to climb 4 Wainwrights in under 6 hours, including the stunning Hay Stacks.

After descending back to Gatesgarth Farm, we headed straight to Buttermere for a wild swim picked from Swimming Wild in the Lake District by Suzanna Swims. We chose Crag Wood — a narrow spit of slate where it only takes a few steps to reach deep, clear water. Cold, beautiful, and unforgettable!

That evening, we cooked up a cabbage and butternut squash one-pot recipe from Fell Foodie Cook Out — probably the best camp meal we’ve ever had.

On Sunday, we opted for something gentler: a scenic lakeside walk from Mountain Walks: Helvellyn that took us up to the dramatic Aira Force waterfall — the perfect way to wrap up the trip.

We’re hoping to fit in a few more Lake District weekends this summer. Got any favourite hikes or swim spots? Let us know in the comments! ⛰️💦

Just back from my hols and so pleased I managed to pop and see the brilliant Stoney Middleton Wells designed by Si which included a tribute to Ethel Haythornthwaite.

The well dressing tells a story of how important the Peak District was for Ethel- and how the park is for all of us.

Ethel was pioneer of the countryside movement that went on to become our beloved Peak District. Her tireless campaigning ensured a greenbelt around Sheffield and led to the formation of the Peak District National Park in 1951.

Reading the notes accompanying the well Si was inspired by Ethel’s life but also our book Ethel by

In Ethel, award-winning author Helen Mort explores the life of this countryside revolutionary who has been overlooked by history. Born into wealth yet frugal, ever restless but infinitely patient, widowed at twenty-two, independent and thoroughly ahead of her time, Ethel Haythornthwaite helped save the British countryside at a time when simply to be a woman was challenge enough.
