Do It Thissen

Do It Thissen Do It Thissen is based in Sheffield, UK and supports the local independent/DIY music scene of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

"Do It Thissen" is Yorkshire dialect for "Do It Yourself" (DIY)

It was also the name of a 9-day long exhibition/event of September 2012 as part of the University of Sheffield's "Festival of the Mind" and which was curated by Dr Matthew Cheeseman and Jon Downing

The exhibition focused on the DIY/independent music scene which flourished in Sheffield and South Yorkshire during the years 1978 - 1982

Do It Thissen Records was formed in 2018 to support the DIY/independent music scene by releasing small runs of pressed vinyl & lathe-cut singles, EPs and LPs by local artists

Not a Do It Thissen release, but label alumnus DIMITRI has just completed a side project entitled “Oliver! By Oliver.”

Cassette (edition of 30) & digital (unlimited) only, this album tells the TRUE story of how William Shakespeare actually wrote the story of Oliver Twist, accurately predicting what Victorian England would look like - all set to 21st century synthetic sounds - and with TRUE but potentially unverifiable Oliver!-related facts via excursions into late 20th century musicals…

Give it a listen, you’ll soon see what I mean

Not long to go until this book launch in Sheffield! Thrilled to be spinning a few records during the evening in the august company of Warp DJs, Memory Dance, and Gut Level.

While we're between releases, here are a couple of events that are happening in Sheffield in the next few weeks, and with which the label is involved:

Firstly, there's a gig taking place on Saturday 25th April at Mary Street Live in Sheffield (95 Mary Street, S1 4RT); it's billed as "Neighbourhood Watch #2" and features live music from Ayusp, Brown Fang, and Curtain Twitcher, with DJ sets from me (Jon Do It Thissen), and Alimakavelli.

To make it all extra groovy and trippy, there'll be oil projections from Mad Hatters Lightshow.

There's a bar! Tickets are £9.50 - It'll be more on the door.

Three top bands, and especially good to see Curtain Twitcher opening up the night. Their recent LP "Leap The Dips" has received rave reviews from the electronic music press. Full disclosure: the band are made up of two-thirds of the band "Surreal Appeal" for whom we released a 7" single and 10" EP back in 2021. Curtain Twitcher are less pop, and more squelchy electronica though.

Then on Thursday 7th May at Crookes Social Club (Mulehouse Road, S10 1TD), there's a launch event for a new book on the history of independent music in Sheffield. "Groovy, Laid Back & Nasty" is by local author Daniel Dylan Wray, and I can confirm that it's an essential read even if you have only a passing interest in the local music scene. Tickets are £6, and I believe that copies of the book will be on sale at the event.

The launch event will feature DDW in an interview/Q&A session, and I'll be popping up to spin some Sheffield related records in the august company of other DJs from Warp Records, Memory Dance, and Gut Level. Our pal Adrian Flanagan will be there too, with his Acid Klaus Bingo Bonanza (Entry included in ticket price). Prizes to be won. Nonsense to be had!

Hope to see some of you at either or both events - please come and say hello!

DIT-080 / DIT-081 / Mouthparts lathe-cut records are now all sold out the label ... and I believe the bands' copies are all spoken for, too.

Unlimited listens for free on Bandcamp though, and why not buy a digital download from the bands, as well (links via the label release pages).

To those who've listened and bought - many thanks! News of forthcoming releases will be revealed later in the month

Don't forget the launch event for the Knorke mini-album ... in Sheffield on Saturday 18th April

Quick reminder that the launch event for Mouthparts lathe-cut 7" single (DIT-081) is to be held tomorrow - Saturday 4th April - at Mary St Live. Also in the line-up: Dearthworms and It'll be noisy!

Only three copies of the single left on the label's Bandcamp page - all pre-orders have now been sent and should be with their new owners.

Fans of The Voltz … new cassette out on ForgeMaster Records !!!

Four songs pressed into magnetic tape like a plan being quietly unfolded across a city map. Somewhere between the flicker of neon and the rattle of late-night buses, a small gang of guitars decided the future looked suspiciously like 1974. Not nostalgia - reclamation. Glitter ground into the pavemen...
