Thursday 20th February 2025

I've caught my bosses sniffle from him. Grrrrrr.

Plus my I've had to buy Chloramphenicol antibiotic eye drops from 'Boots' to fight off an eye infection: My sons' dad stupidly squirted me in the eyes with a kids water pistol full of fetid water. I do hope our offspring (also called our 'Genetic Projection Unit' by his dad), doesn't turn out to be as pratty as his dad!!

Reminder - we are selling stuff off prior to closing. So why not come in and ask for a discount on anything you fancy?

Just REDUCED these binoculars today - Opticron Verano 8X42.
They were £404, closing down offer of £370.
Fully boxed with a case, straps and full warranty.

Regrettably, we are announcing the imminent closure of Sheffield Photographic Centre, Hickmott Road. It’s been fun over the last 38 years, meeting and helping all of you fantastic people. We’ve seen and helped many people become professionals in this industry, but now it’s feet up time.

We truly are so grateful for all our customers who have supported us over the years. Thanks to all the students and younger crowd who’ve nurtured the interest in all things photographic. This has given us a great feeling of love towards all of you. We will miss you!

The shop will close mid to end of March, but we will keep you informed in ‘Jens Blog’ up to the end.

There will be price reductions on most items in the shop, so please pop in and ask for a bargain.

Cheers, John and Jen.

A WALK AROUND SHILLITO WOODS

On Saturday 14 September 2024 we have an RSPB Sheffield Local Walk around Shillito Woods on which everyone is welcome.

Leaders: Jean & John Coulson

The walk starts in Shillito Woods but also explores adjacent areas of the Eastern Moors.
On our previous walk in this area at a similar time of year we saw a good range of birds including Kestrel, Buzzard, Raven, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Stonechat and Yellowhammer.

Meet 10:00 am in Shillito Woods car park. To reach this, take A621 Owler Bar to Baslow road. After 2.5 miles turn left onto Fox Lane. At the fork in the road after passing the former Ramsley Reservoir, take the left and the car park is on the right a short distance further on. M.R.: SK295749; What3Words: survivor.breaches.lunging Postcode: S18 7WG (Google map)

Walks are free-of-charge and booking is not required. Some of our walk locations are accessible using public transport but by no means all. So, in the interests of the environment and to ease pressure on parking spaces, please would you car share whenever possible.

Most walks inevitably involve some rougher terrain so please ensure that you have appropriate footwear, are wearing appropriate clothing for the weather and are sufficiently capable of covering the route.

Please contact us at [email protected]
before the day if you have any queries about walk routes and accessibility.

INDOOR MEETING NOTICE

Is it September already?
Time to be thinking about passage migrants and the return of the SBSG Indoor Meeting programme.

This month we combine the two strands as we welcome son of Sheffield Richard Ashbee to talk us through the wonders of wildlife in his adopted home, the Shetland Isles. An accomplished photographer of birds, landscape and the night sky Richard will take us on a journey to this migration mecca.

This meeting is ONLINE only via Microsoft Teams. Joining details will be shared in Member e-Newsletter this weekend.

I am dedicating some pages of our website to a project I've decided to start: Having worked here over 30 years, I worked through the original years of people using film cameras first time round. The world has changed so much since then, but these old film cameras are being used again by younger generations of people eager to explore film photography for the first time, second time around.
I'm interested to explore all sorts of films/methods/interests, including the newer film emulsions that weren’t around 25 years ago such as films like Lomography, Washi, Flic, Cinestill, etc, as well as old-school Gold, Ilford, Polaroid, Infrared films, 126mm, half-frame, panoramic, 127mm etc.
This is NOT a 'best photo' competition; it's about you and your love for film photography. And it's just for local Sheffield dwellers at this time (whether indigenous or at Uni here etc).
SO... My first few pages have been created, and can be viewed here:
http://www.sheffphotoctre.com/photographic-accesories/
If you would like a page too, to express your thoughts, film user experiences and images, call in the shop or ring me, Jen, to get started. (0114) 2667077 Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Saturdays 10am - 3pm

BOTANICAL GARDENS EVENT, JUNE 22 & 23 2024 from 10am till 4pm

This is your invitation to come and meet RSPB Sheffield Local Group in the Dorothy
Fox Centre in Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Come and meet our friendly volunteers and find out what we get up to, with our walks, talks and field trips.

We will be serving refreshments of homemade cakes and hot or cold drinks for £3.50
per person. As well as sales of plants, books, bric-a-brac and other goods, there will be a display on ‘Sheffield Wildlife’ for you to peruse.

This is our big fundraising event of the year, and we aim to raise over a thousand
pounds to donate to the RSPB to help fund their projects. This financial year we
have chosen to donate to RSPB Old Moor, our local reserve, where the reserve management team are continuing to improve the new footpath along the Field Pools by re-profiling the bank that runs parallel to the path in order to give better views.

We look forward to seeing you all there, and if you can, bring along a friend(s) as well.

Thank you,

Helen Ensor, Group Leader

With RSPB Sheffield Local Group – I just made it onto their weekly engagement list by being one of their top engagers! 🎉

As I write, there are three very handsome, very healthy looking juvenile Peregrines taking it in turns to stand on the very edge of the nest box to flap their wings about in a furious fashion. …

An evening WALK AROUND ORGREAVE LAKES

On Wednesday 5 June we have an RSPB Sheffield Local Walk around Orgreave Lakes on which everyone is welcome. THIS IS AN EVENING WALK

Leader: Helen & John Ensor

Like so many of South Yorkshire’s birding sites, the Orgreave area is a remnant of the coal industry. Its mixture of river, lakes, open ground and woodland now proves attractive to a wide range of birds and developing as one of the more regularly watched and interesting sites in our area.

The lakes are home to a wide range of wildfowl. Waders at the lake edges can include lapwing, common sandpiper, ringed plover and oystercatcher as well as some less common species. The River Rother, which runs along the edge of the area is home to kingfisher and grey heron and the mixture of young woodland and rough grassland surrounding the lakes holds a variety of smaller birds.

Meet: 7.00pm on Rivelin Way, Waverley Estate, Rotherham (Turn right off Sheffield Parkway onto B6200 Handsworth Road. At the bottom of Handsworth Hill turn leftat the traffic lights onto Orgreave Lane, then left onto Rotherham Road, after going over a bridge take the second exit at the roundabout and then first right onto Rivelin Way).
