I Monster’s Dean Honer has been an invaluable partner throughout the Stroposcobic Synergy project as music producer. He guided the distinctive contributions of five musicians to create a cohesive final piece of music.

What would happen if musicians responded to photographs of their own performance?

The inspiration for Stroboscopic Synergy came from the extraordinary work of photographer Gjon Mili, who used stroboscopic light to capture movement as a sequence of moments in time.

Seeing those images sparked a question.

That question became the starting point for this project.

Now that the Sheffield short Festival news is out, I can finally start sharing a little more about this project.

It began as a simple experiment, from wanting to work on something a little unusual.

Capture a musical performance using stroboscopic light.

Then ask the musicians to respond to those images with a new piece of music - The Stroboscopic Score.

Along the way I’ve been documenting the process behind it all with and thanks to this became the documentary, Stroboscopic Synergy.

My filming skills have improved significantly, developing how I framed the musicians and combining artificial and natural light to get the best results.

What does light sound like?

I’m so excited that Stroboscopic Synergy Stroboscopic will be screening at Sheffield short festival on 19th September 2026

The project explores an unusual collaboration between photography and music.

I’ve passionately been capturing musical performances using stroboscopic photgraphy
over the last few years.

With Westley, we worked on assembling musicians from different musical backgrounds to and with funding from Arts Council England funding I was able to create the first pieces of this project.

It’s been a fascinating creative experiment exploring how visual form can shape musical response.

Lots more to come about the documentary and my amazing collaborators.

I’m delighted that Stroboscopic Synergy has been selected to screen Showroom Cinema & Café Bar as part of the Sheffield Film Festival on19 September.

Stroboscopic Synergy is a film, made in collaboration with Eve Wood and supported by Arts Council England, exploring the meeting point between stroboscopic photography and musical response.

Pulp’s What Do You Do For An Encore is screening on the same day, so why not make us part of a double bill!
