Youth unemployment in the UK is rising and Sheffield is no exception.

Recent ONS figures show an increase in the number of young people struggling to find work, with many spending months applying for jobs without success.

For this feature, I spoke to a 20-year-old in Sheffield who has been out of work since September, alongside insights from local unemployment charity Ascend and an Economics Professor at the University of Sheffield.

The story explores what’s driving youth unemployment, what support is available locally, and what these statistics really mean for young people trying to get into work today.

Financial pressure remains one of the defining challenges facing students today. In 2026, 9 in 10 students reported that financial concerns had negatively affected their mental health — a significant increase on previous years.

The figures raise an important question: has 2026 become the most financially difficult year to be a student, or does it reflect a longer-term worsening trend?

I spoke to the people experiencing food poverty and the food banks and community fridges trying their hardest to cope with increasing demands.

Out of the 10 million people estimated to develop osteoporosis, 8 million (80%) of those are women. Weightlifting is essential for women’s health to prevent deteriorating conditions such as this, yet there are constant issues & reminders that it’s a space built for men. This is the fitness gap. What does the England and Wales abortion decriminalisation actually change, and is it enough?

We have spoken to activist groups Sheffield's Right to Choose and 40 Days for Life about the decriminalisation, what it will change, and their thoughts.

What are your thoughts about the new bill?
