CALLING ALL WILDLIFE LOVERS - DO YOUR BIT FOR UK BUTTERFLIES

Last summer, Butterfly Conservation’s annual Big Butterfly Count revealed a concerning decline in butterfly numbers, which were the lowest in the count’s history. The 2024 figures followed a pattern of long-term decline as butterflies struggle with habitat and environment changes as well as pesticide use. As a result, the wildlife charity declared a butterfly emergency and this year they are asking even more people to get involved. Here’s how to take part:
• Download the Big Butterfly Count app or visit bigbutterflycount.org
• Between 18th July and 10th August, spend 15 minutes in any outdoor space and note the number and types of butterflies you see
• Log your sightings on the website or app

PICTURE POSER

Always on duty, our editor, Mike Firth, was browsing an antique shop way up north on Scotland's Isle of Skye when he spotted this ancient photograph. Does anyone have information about Wallis & Wallis of Ecclesall Road? Even better, can anyone identify the young people pictured?

TWINNING FRIENDS FOR 75 YEARS

Sheffield and the city of Bochum in Germany have been twinned for 75 years, this year. To celebrate, and to inform residents of the history of the twinning, Bochum recently brought Sheffield into its own city centre.
A space known as the ‘Sheffield Inn’ was unveiled in the city. The pop-up venue showcased information about Sheffield including artwork showcasing iconic Sheffield buildings and a display case with exhibits from the 75 years of friendship.
Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Coun Safiya Saeed, visited the German city, and the pop-up shop. She said: “Both Sheffield and Bochum share a rich industrial heritage, having grown to prominence through the development of our coal and steel industries. This common ground laid the foundation for a strong and meaningful partnership. Over the years, we have exchanged official greetings, hosted regular visits from delegations, and engaged in numerous cultural, educational, and economic exchanges.
“Let us celebrate this milestone with joy and optimism, as we look forward to a future filled with shared achievements and lasting bonds.”
