At the end of the 2023 I made the decision to start approaching 'live' sets in a different way to most people - by starting out with no presaved sequences or patterns and actually jamming live in front of a crowd, while still keeping the grooves moving and progressing like you would expect in a DJ set. This set is the first time I did that in front of a crowd in a venue.

This approach is more of a challenge to get right than a pre-planned/pre-sequenced 'live' set but is way more in line with where I come from as a musician. I've always composed through improvisation and this approach means each and every set is uniquely different to the last.

The gear I used was:
Akai Force (main brain)
Roland TR-8 (drum machine)
Korg Volca Bass (bass synth)
Behringer TD-3 (acid synth)
Boss RC-600 (guitar/bass looper)
Soma Ether (noise machine
Behringer UMC1820 (audio interface)
Solid State Logic Fusion (analog colouring box)

Let me know what you think of the final product!

Big thanks to Jim Topliss for recording the footage!

Losing this uninhibited club-born escape from reality would have been an irredeemable travesty for British rave culture.

As part of my MA study at Waterbear, I've chosen to explore the research question:

"How can aspiring professionals from lower income backgrounds overcome perceived class barriers in the UK music industries?"

I'm looking for people who work in music-related roles in the UK (of all classes and levels) to spare a few minutes to complete this survey on their experience of class barriers.

I'm particularly looking for people who would consider themselves now to be an established professional and who identify as coming from a working class background.

Please share to as many people as possible.
