Hurricane by John Papa Gros

Yesterday, August 29th, marked the anniversaries of Hurricanes Katrina (2005) and Ida (2021) in New Orleans.
⚜️
Originally recorded by Levon Helm, John was inspired to record ‘Hurricane’ after living through the aftermath of both hurricanes. The song captures the resolve of the proud people of Louisiana to weather any storm.

For John personally, it feels like these lyrics were written for him. Hurricane Ida’s winds blew an oak tree into their house and studio just as they were beginning to re-enter life after the isolation of the pandemic. It took 16 months to rebuild their home and another six months to complete the studio. ‘It’s hard to measure the emotional and physical strain of that time. One thing is for sure—we survived.’

John is delighted to be playing a midweek show at Nightjar , Shoreditch on Wednesday 23rd September, as part of his UK solo tour. If you’ve never been, it’s a wonderful place to listen to live music. It’s a proper basement speakeasy bar - and the thing I love is that it’s got almost the same iconic pressed tin ceiling as the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans where John is a regular performer (his Saturday night show before he gets on the plane to London is at the Maple Leaf) so he’ll feel right at home at Nightjar!

New Orleans has its fair share of musical ambassadors, but few are more rooted in the cracked sidewalks and popping speakers of the Crescent City than John ‘Papa’ Gros. Born and raised in the city, Gros melds funk, rock, jazz, and blues to deliver a sound that is both innovative and unmistakably New Orleans.

Gros launched his career as a solo performer in the early 1990s,
quickly gaining attention from marquee artists such as George
Porter Jr. and Snooks Eaglin, both of whom brought him on board as a supporting musician. As he sat behind the keys, backing up some of the city’s most iconic musicians, he soaked in a lifetime of experience and continued to develop his craft. He released his solo debut, Day’s End, in 2004.

The next dozen years would be dedicated to leading and recording six albums with his band, Papa Grows Funk. He returned to solo work with 2016’s River’s On Fire and cemented his legacy as a part of the direct lineage of New Orleans music with 2020’s Central City. His latest project ‘Giants’ (2026) is a groove deep tribute to the giants who shaped his musical DNA - Allen Toussaint, Dr John, The Meters, Levon Helm and Billy Preston. ‘Giants’ captures Gros at full throttle: reverent but fearless, steeped in tradition yet unmistakably present. This is New Orleans music as a living thing - these giants still walk among us.
