In just under two weeks we’ll be opening the doors at Denby Dale Pie Hall for our first ever Business Exchange by HD8 Life... And we’ve already got a pretty awesome mix of local businesses, organisations and people booked to join us.

So far, the room will include:

Cow and Giraffe, Sam Earnshaw, Soulfullbysamantha, Lucky’s Paws , Proper Golf , Alura Beauty Clinic , WoodSmiths Family Business , Serene Wellbeing Huddersfield , HDHR Services , Resolute Commercial Finance Ltd , From Seed To Sky / WOW Team, Magpie Design , Nurture Movement , CV Graphics , Kimberley Natasha Photography , Cool Water Direct , Think Forensic, Pearson Financial Wellbeing Mortgages, Claire Stow - Travel Counsellor, Georgie School of Theatre Arts , Kixx Huddersfield , Fully Re-Covered Bespoke Upholstery , Eyes&Teas , Sublime Indulgences , Holden Smith Law , Cyber Certain Limited, Nortonthorpe Sports Club , The Denby Care Home , Only 1 Design , RippleNorth , Dress It Yourself Event Hire , Nature Nurture Nourish, Nationwide Waste and Recycling Ltd and Elevate, Tom & Lauren Hopkinson Personal Estate Agents 🙌

We’ll also have four short, useful speaker sessions from Gayle at HDHR, Vicki at Resolute Commercial Finance, Sharron at Nurture Movement and Juliet from From Seed to Sky / WOW Team. These won't be long-winded or conference-y, just useful bits of knowledge you can take away with you.

And because apparently networking is vastly improved by cake, Grandma Freda's Kitchen is very generously providing some sweet treats for us too 😋

The Business Exchange is on Friday 25 September, 11am–1pm at Denby Dale Pie Hall.

Tickets are available through the HD8 Life website, or follow the link in our bio. They’re just £5 for up to two attendees from the same business or organisation.

If you’ve been meaning to book, go on and get yourself on that list 🖤

I got this message from Woodlands Close Bake Shed the other day and it made me VERY happy.

They’ve just started supplying The Urban Kitchen in Kirkburton with sourdough and bakes after the two businesses connected because of our HD EIGHT campaign - and this is exactly the sort of thing I hoped would happen when I started the campaign 🖤

HD EIGHT is partly about encouraging all of us to spend more of our money locally, but that applies to businesses too. If something you need can be bought, made or supplied by another business down the road, it’s absolutely worth knowing they’re there and having a conversation.

In this case, that conversation has turned into actual business for one local company and a new local supplier for another.

More of this please 🙏

If you run a business and haven’t signed up to HD EIGHT yet, you can find out more from our website (it's totally FREE 😉) or drop me a DM or comment.

The amount of detective work that has gone into creating the HD8 History St Paul's Church, Shepley Poppy Trail is immense 🖤

It is well worth a visit if you're out and about this weekend. If you're not, simply save the post and take a wander the next time you're in Shepley.

A huge thanks to the fantastic people behind HD8 History for all you do to preserve our local stories.

One of the things I love about local archives is that the things being preserved aren’t necessarily the things that would ever make it into a history book...

They’re photographs of streets we recognise but which looked completely different 60 years ago, local businesses that have disappeared, school photos, families, clubs and societies, old events, newspaper cuttings, documents and all the ordinary bits of life that - if nobody keeps them.- eventually just disappear.

That’s exactly what Kirkburton Village Archive has been working to preserve, and this September they’re taking that a step further with the launch of The Universal Archive.

Working with Microform Digital, the idea is to use technology to preserve those everyday stories and make them available to people much more widely, because every person, family, community group, organisation and business contributes something to the history of a place, even if nobody thought at the time that it was particularly “historic." And, I personally think there’s something really lovely about that.

The archive has already collected a huge amount relating to Kirkburton and the surrounding area, and the new project is about making sure those stories aren’t simply sitting in boxes or disappearing as generations pass.

There are two launch events taking place as part of Kirklees Heritage Open Days if you’d like to go and have a nosy, meet the people behind the archive and find out more:

Sunday 13 September, 1pm–4pm at Denby Dale Pie Hall

Saturday 19 September, 11am–3pm at All HALLOWS CHURCH, KIRKBURTON

If you’ve got old photographs, documents, memories or bits of local history tucked away at home, this might also be a very good reminder not to assume nobody else would be interested in them.

Quite often, the seemingly ordinary stuff turns out to be the really interesting bit 🖤

Four weeks today, we’ll be at The George Inn for the next Social Collective 🖤

If you’ve seen us talking about it before but still aren’t quite sure whether it’s “for you”, here’s probably the simplest way to explain it:

It’s a room full of local people who are doing interesting things. Some of those people run businesses, some are involved with community groups or local projects, some are self-employed, freelance, creative, charitable, or a mixture of the lot!

You don’t need to be there to sell anything, you don’t need a stack of business cards (I don’t have any!), a rehearsed introduction or a particular reason for coming - you can just come and meet people.

The last few Social Collectives have led to collaborations, work, recommendations, new contacts and people discovering things happening on their doorstep. But, equally, sometimes you just have a really good conversation with a person you’d never have met otherwise.

This time we’ll be at The George in Upper Denby on Tuesday 6 October, with arrival from 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

We’re also adding a short guest speaker spot for the first time, but I promise I’m not secretly turning it into three hours of presentations! The majority of the evening will still be spent doing what The Social Collective was set up for: chatting to each other.

Tickets are £10 per person, including a welcome drink, and you can book through the HD8 Life website.

So, will we be seeing you on 6 October?

08/09/2026

Can you help?

I’ve had a message from someone looking for a treatment room to hire in or around HD8 from October onwards.

They’re a trained acupuncturist, also offering head massage and natural face lift massage, and already have their own equipment. The room would need to be suitable for acupuncture, so specifically have:

• an integrated hand-washing sink
• clinical, wipe-clean flooring

They’re ideally looking for somewhere they could work from on a room-hire basis while building their local client base.

If you have a suitable room available, or know of a local clinic, salon, therapy space or other premises that might, please drop HD8 Life a message and I’ll happily pass the details on 🖤
