Ollie Lisney hopes to swap ciabattas for chart success. The Shaftesbury singer-songwriter, who works at his mumā€™s cafĆ©, King Alfredā€™s Kitchen, has recorded his debut album at Mill Farm Studios in Bradford Abbas. The 12-track release was produced by St James Street-based Tom Joblin.

Ollie paid for the sessions himself, spreading the work across the past year. He says the process changed how he thinks about music. ā€˜You walk in with a song and youā€™re confident about it, but I quickly learnt that studio tools are just an interpretation of reality,ā€™ Ollie said. He now hears music differently. ā€˜All these little sound effects are driving the song forward.ā€™

Rather than stick to old material, Ollie kept writing right up to each session. Most of the album is made up of those spontaneous creations. ā€˜Thereā€™s a continuity that I didnā€™t intend and didnā€™t know was there,ā€™ he said.

His writing is instinctive and unplanned. ā€˜I sit down and start tinkering. Usually melody and music come together, and I hit record on my phoneā€¦ thereā€™ll be a sentence or two, and then I just piece those bits together.ā€™ The result, he says, often surprises even him.

Ollieā€™s personal lyrics stand out. In ā€œA Knot I Canā€™t Undoā€, he compares emotional frustration to a tangled shoelace. ā€˜That phrase defined everything else,ā€™ Ollie said. Another track, jokingly titled ā€œBaked Beans,ā€ was written the night before a studio session and named on the spot.

Heā€™s hosted a few live gigs in the Nunā€™s Passage bar beneath the cafĆ© but says heā€™s not ready for the Shaftesbury Fringe just yet. He hopes to return to the stage in 2026 with a new confidence and catalogue of songs.

His music is available under the name Ollie Robert Lisney on Spotify and streaming platforms.
