🎉 This year, 509 Arts turns 15!

We’ve enjoyed fifteen years of creative adventures, brilliant people, and projects that have left their mark on Bradford and beyond.

To celebrate, every fortnight we’ll be shining a spotlight on a project from our archives, the people who made it happen, and the stories behind it.

First up: My Last Car 🚗

Car love meets climate change

An epic road trip that explored our complex relationship with the car through exhibition, live performance and community celebration.

My Last Car invited us to look at the world of the car in a different way and to think about all that we have gained – and lost – over the past 100 years. The project even included taking apart a car and transforming it into a gallery object and performance space!

Created in collaboration with Warwick Arts Centre, Pioneer Projects and Ryedale Folk Museum, the project unfolded across three venues over 18 months, exploring what the car means in modern society, how we’ve lived with it, and how we might live with it differently in the future.

In Bentham, the local community also created My Last CARnival – an extraordinary arts trail encouraging people to “Get Out Of The Car!” and explore with family and friends.

Do you remember My Last Car? Were you involved in the project or did you visit one of the events? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments.

What a wonderful time we had at our Lifers Reunion on Thursday at Bradford Arts Centre! 🎶❤️

It was such a joy to bring everyone together again, sharing songs, stories, laughter and memories. Seeing familiar faces, hearing voices raised in song, and celebrating the friendships that have grown through Life Class.

We captured a snippet for you to enjoy 🎵✨

We’ve been so moved by the memories people have been sharing with us 💛

This one from Steven Watson, former student and BUTG President, really captures what Eras in the Mill is all about:

“I wouldn’t have the life I have now if it wasn’t for TiM and BUTG. Because of them I have some amazing friends who I’m still very close to today. It’s also the reason I actually ended up staying in Bradford.”

A huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to send in their stories so far - they’re helping us build a powerful picture of what Theatre in the Mill means to so many people over the years.

Just to recap, Theatre in the Mill is turning 50, to mark the 50th birthday, we have been commissioned to explore TiM’s impact on the many people and companies that have passed through its doors - staff, students, performers, companies, audiences and theatre makers of all kinds.

If you’ve got a memory to share, we’d love to hear from you ✨

We’re thrilled that Nick Ahad gave Life Class a mention during the Bradford City of Culture closing event, broadcast by the BBC. What a brilliant surprise and such a proud moment for everyone who’s been part of the journey.

A huge thank-you to Nick for recognising the project and to everyone who’s helped make Life Class what it is. Moments like this remind us how many people our work has touched.

Wishing you all a happy Christmas and let’s see what 2026 brings 🥳
