Building your business without masking your true self... yes, I'm talking about authenticity again!

When I started this business, I didn't know I was neurodivergent. I knew there was something different about me, but, honestly, I thought I was a bit broken and just different to everyone else. So, to compensate for what I thought were my 'failings', I masked, without even realising I was doing it.

Discovering I was autistic meant that I was suddenly able to understand why I thought and approached things differently to other people, and I realised just how much I had been masking.

Deciding to unmask and be my actual self in my business has been a genuine game-changer. My clients understand me (and I understand them); I'm much kinder to myself if I'm having an unproductive day; and I'm building something that I am incredibly proud of.

These 5 simple tips can help you build your business as your real self.

You built something incredible... Now let's tell the world about it in a way that feels authentic to you, not draining.

Your business didn't come from a template. It came from your unique perspective, your lived experience, your ideas and your determination to do things differently.

So why would your social media follow someone else's formula?

The 'post 3 times a day' crowd?
The 'just use these viral hooks' advice?
The pressure to be 'on' all the time?

That might work for neurotypical business owners with different energy patterns, but it's not designed for you.

I work with you to create a social media strategy that:
- Respects your energy levels
- Celebrates your authentic voice
- Reaches your ideal customers
- Doesn't require you to perform or mask

Because the world needs what you're building, and sharing it shouldn't cost you your wellbeing.

Here's a simple social media tip that costs nothing but can transform your results...

Stop using jargon and start speaking like a human.

I see too many social media posts that are full of "innovative solutions," "cutting-edge approaches," and "synergistic partnerships." But what if their audience is local families looking for reliable childcare, for example? Their followers might not have any idea what they actually do or how it would help them if they use jargon and complicated language.

The solution... use simple clear language in the content, which explains exactly what you offer and why it matters to your audience.

Engagement will increase and more importantly, the business will start to getting actual enquiries instead of just 'likes'.

Your expertise is valuable, but only if people understand it; avoid the jargon, explain things clearly, and watch your engagement improve.

Do you need help making your social media more accessible? Send me a DM - I love to help small businesses communicate more effectively.

I am so happy (can you tell by my photo??) to be attending the Speaker School with Conversations Unlimited and The Rookie CEO Club starting on Monday!

I never thought I'd even consider doing something like this, but how many times have I said that already this year? Apparently this is the year where I do a whole load of new, terrifying and exciting things 💪

BRING IT ON!

I've spent a lot of time over the past year really focusing on growing my network, and it's at the stage where there are some people in my community who are now genuine friends; people I want to see and talk to about everything, not just work - although it's great to have people who really 'get' the challenges of running your own business.

Yesterday, I met up with the fabulous Sophie from Jaguar Contract Cleaning Services Ltd and we found we've got even more in common than we first realised... and a coffee and chat turned into lunch for over three hours 😆

Find your people; the support and friendship is everything ✨️

Look at this picture. I look fairly happy, right? It doesn't look like I'd just been through a rather emotionally traumatic experience only 10 minutes before, does it? Only, I had.

This was taken last week at a 'Meet the Experts' careers day at my local primary school. I'm quite involved with the school, so when I heard about this event, I happily volunteered.

This is the same school my children go to, and my youngest is autistic and he struggles most days with school-life, especially when it comes to saying goodbye to me in the mornings. Having said that, he'd had a brilliant Term 1 since the starting back in September, so I thought he'd be ok with me being there; I'd talked about it with him so he knew to expect me. But when his class came into the hall and he saw me, he clung to me; when he was supposed to go back to his class, he refused. And I'd still been trying to talk to his classmates throughout. I had to walk him back to class, where he was distraught, peel him off me, and quickly go back to the hall, ready for the next class. And it didn't end there. He was completely dysregulated for the rest of the day and was very emotional that evening.

We've now decided that it would be best if I don't go to any events that he'll be at, including his last Nativity and the Christmas Fair (which I co-run with the Friends Of). I'm devastated.

And one of the immediate consequences of this was that as soon as I got home, I had a big cry about it, felt horrific and had to go to bed. I had to cancel a podcast recording I'd had scheduled but fortunately, my lovely guest was more than understanding.

I guess the point of this (rather long!) post is just to say that what you see on social media isn't always what it seems - looks can be deceiving; and sometimes you just have to power-through but, on the flip side of that, it's also ok to take time for yourself. And this is what I tell my clients - flexibility is absolutely key, and it works both ways. I might've been able to do the podcast recording, but my head and heart were not focused enough, and that's not fair on my guests or listeners.

So, if you've made it this far - sorry! And thank you for reading it all 🫶

Finding out I'm autistic whilst running my own business has taught me that what I once saw as limitations are actually my greatest strengths...

When I first started Crescent Digital Marketing, I didn't know I was autistic, and I worried that my need for detailed planning, my delayed processing and my hyper-focusing would be problems. I thought clients would find my thorough approach overwhelming, or that I'd get too caught up in perfecting one small detail.

It turns out that once I got my diagnosis and finally understood myself better, I realised that these traits are exactly what my clients needed. My detailed planning means nothing gets missed; my delayed processing means that I carefully process information; my hyperfocus means when I'm working on their social media strategy, I'm giving it my complete attention and spotting things others might overlook.

Additionally, being a full-time carer for my youngest son, who is also autistic (and likely ADHD & PDA), has taught me patience, creative problem-solving, and how to communicate complex ideas in simple, accessible ways. These skills translate directly into helping small business owners understand their digital marketing without the jargon.

Your neurodivergent traits are not obstacles to overcome - they're competitive advantages waiting to be recognised.

What's something about the way your brain works that's actually become a strength in your business?
