'Why do I do this to myself?' 🙈
That was all I kept thinking yesterday morning at Speaker School, with Conversations Unlimited and The Rookie CEO Club.
I knew that I wanted to be there, I wanted to develop my public speaking skills, and hopefully take it to a level where I can confidently deliver workshops, but I was full of self-doubt and had a complete lack of confidence.
But I did it... I got up there, and I did my talk in front of my fellow Speaker School classmates, albeit with a couple of false starts as I (predictably) spoke too quickly, trying to rush through it.
And, honestly... I actually enjoyed it! Yes, it was terrifying putting myself out there, especially talking about my work that I feel so strongly about. And yes, I made mistakes, stumbling through it. But I survived and I got some genuinely encouraging, constructive feedback, which has just left me wanting to persevere, practice and refine my skills.
So, if you've ever thought 'Oh, I can't do that' or 'I'm not XYZ enough to do that'... stop for a second, think about it again, and if it's something you really do want to do... give it a try. You'll never be sorry for trying to do something, but you might end up regretting what you don't do. Yes, it's a cliché, but it's also very true.
And whilst I'm not a great speaker yet, I'm working on it, and one day soon, I will be giving a talk to a room full of people; and that's just the beginning of this speaking journey for me.
Big thanks to the incredibly talented and unfailingly supportive Beth from Conversations Unlimited for being her wonderful self and to my brilliant Speaker Schoolers - Tracey of Zerenity Creates, Sophie of Jaguar Contract Cleaning Services Ltd, Steph of Books & Balance, Sam of Fuzzy Logic Tom of IT Manager Services Ltd and David Dadswell.
