It was a few years ago when I first heard about the Oil Rig Graveyard in Cromarty Firth. If you know me, you’ll know I love shooting that sort of stuff on a moody day but the four hour drive had put it on the back burner. By luck, I was up that neck of the woods for work so I took my chance and made a detour on my way home to get some shots. Unfortunately, the best view of the rigs would’ve been aboard the small ferry that I had just missed and to make matters worse, the weather was sunny af!

On the summit of Ben Bhraggie stands a monument to George Granville Leveson-Gower, the first Duke of Sutherland. To the casual visitor, it’s just another piece of Scottish history set against breathtaking views.

Behind the imposing stone figure lies a far darker story. The Duke played a central role in the Highland Clearances of the early 1800s. Thousands of Highland families were forced from their homes and land to make way for vast sheep farms. Whole communities were burned out, livelihoods destroyed, and Gaelic culture driven to the edge of extinction.

For many, it’s a painful reminder of suffering and stolen land. I must admit I didn’t know much about the Highland Clearances, but after visiting this site, I’ve gained quite a bit of knowledge on the subject.

My question for you all is... Should it remain as a lesson in history or fall as a relic of oppression?
