Thanks so much Nicola and David! So many fun things happened at this wedding . Nicola is an Eminem “Stan” so I ended up playing 4 Eminems, but this still wasn’t the most-played artist of the evening (keep reading). There was genuine legit Irish dancing unfolding during B*witched. Nicola and David entered on the balcony to “We Found Love” and fired off confetti cannons. They had cardboard masks of their pet dog Charlie, and the idea was that everyone would get hold of them while dancing to “Greyhound” by Swedish House Mafia. I was on the mic announcing “come up here if you want some Charlie”, “there’s still some Charlie don’t be shy”, “One More Tune DJs has all the Charlie” etc. I have no idea why some guests left the stage looking disappointed. So much fun.

As noted by Nicola, sometimes I have to be brave and cast a few lines to see what’s working. Davey had wanted “darts songs” and I gave a few a go, but nobody was really buying-in, so “Eye of the Tiger” had to be faded out early. At around 11pm the Father of the Groom (I think) approached me to say “hey when is Davey going to get a dance the Bride has been on the floor all night.”. I responded “ah kind Sir, is it not the Bride’s day?” but quickly realised the big man wasn’t in the mood for messing around. We had already played some of Davey’s preferred country-rock Post Malone type of songs, but the dad said Davey would like Calvin Harris. I said “Acceptable in the 80s” had already been on, but he was having none of it, so I put on the new Calvin Harris. The big man then came back over 2 minutes later.

“Right when is Calvin Harris coming on?”

“He’s on right now.”

“This isn’t Calvin Harris.”

“Yes it is. It’s been Number 1 for weeks.”

“Aye, but you’re a DJ.”

“Aye but you’re at the shops you’ll hear this, if someone’s got the radio on, you’ll hear this.”

I realised I had to play the big most obvious Calvin Harrises, and I think I ended up playing 4 in a row. Added to “Acceptable in the 80s”, and “We Found Love”, I make that a record 6 Calvin Harrises in one single evening. A record unlikely to be broken.

Before I knew it, it was midnight. What a laugh. JD x

Under A Rock by of Blondie. Stein was at Woodstock, in San Francisco during the summer of love, London in 1977, and behind the Iron Curtain several times (once on a school trip to Moscow). Above all this, he was in New York, and this is really a chronicle of an artist's New York, rather than one about Blondie or even his ~10 year relationship with Debbie Harry. He is friends with Lou Reed, the Ramones, and many other artists and musicians who I had to Google. He owned multiple Warhols and Basquiats and eventually sold most of them to feed his he**in habit.

By 1980 "The Tide is High" and "Rapture" are the top 2 songs in the country, but Chris is exhausted by constantly trying to score drugs. Post-Blondie, he claims that at one point in the 80s, he didn't even leave Manhattan for 4 years.

CBGB's is not a massive part of the story (Blondie got much bigger than it pretty quick), though I never miss a chance to bore about how I attended its final night with & .

There are whole chapters here where events and drugs are reeled off with everything (induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; a new kitten) being given equal significance in a Patrick Bateman-esque monologue. I loved it all, but it won't be for everyone. 5/5

An absolute pleasure to DJ for the Pyott family at 's big 21st birthday bash at The Rowantree (part of The Caves complex in Edinburgh's big party street, the Cowgate).

There was a group WhatsApp where we tried to work out a potential playlist and the broad consensus was house music (I was a bit like "that's a broad genre" 😬), singalong stuff and saxophone songs (Bakermat, Mr Saxophone, etc). I also secretly fancied One Direction might do the business if dropped on the night without warning - and indeed they did (played 2 of theirs).

There were incredibly varied and even cryptic requests from guests ("white girl rap"? 😂) and I usually see my role at parties as being a sort of referee, keeping the dancefloor full by gradually moving through genres and tempo. So I DID play Davey Guetta, Miley Cyrus, Jason Derulo. I did NOT play any " D n B". At 12.45am Generation Z poured out into the Cowgate for further fun, but not before I was hustled into a huddle by guests half my age to dance to "American Pie" 😊 - a really lovely moment.

Thank you & Becky for involving me in your big day . Had a brilliant chat with Sam a few months before the wedding and could have bored him all day about our shared memories of indie nights and parties.

Swipe to see some big ol' tunes getting a run out (Hounds of Love, the remix of ), my notes (I treated this as an apt warm-up for some of the mixes I was planning for the summer party a few days later), photo booth action, and even a daughter - dad dance (I love these - the soundtrack was Jimmy Nail and / Local Hero).

For the record, was cued, but I bottled it. If we are talking that controversial term "indie landfill", i did however now to repeated requests and play Pigeon Detectives' (I was allowed to choose and chose "Romantic Type").

I'd never been to Rosebery Steadings before but you can tell it's had a fair few quid spent on it and feels like a fancier version of a few other south-of-Edinburgh courtyard kind of venues that I won't name for fear of insulting anyone. And of course some may prefer shabby-chic. Certainly should be on your radar if you're venue hunting though.

🧛‍♂️ Thank you very much . Murder on the dancefloor and apparently blood too. Call me a relentless DJ Dracula, wounding the guests' dancing toes.

🐄 This lovely wedding was indeed on the farm and I've included a few snaps of the bucolic country setting. The Bride is always right and requested (amongst other tunes) some pleasant electronic pop of the sort I wouldn't often play (Sigala, Joy Anonymous, Jessie Ware).

🐴 I had to be harangued to play Backstreet Boys by a handsome wee fella in a kilt, to his credit he didn't say "told you so" when it was a hit. I've included footage of a chap on guitar who played after the speeches. He was brilliant!

👩‍🌾 Glastonbury says "leave no trace" but I clumsily left 2 cables which Laura posted back to me! Thanks Laura!

🚜 Ps I didn't have the courage to play "Me and the Farmer" by The Housemartins, which I know all the words to and sang in a school competition in P5 which I won ( where's my trophy?) (I had repressed this memory until right now.)

Belated beautiful birthday gift from Pin Ups Chap, Paul Smith (not that one). Over the Rainbow by and a bottle of the big man's sparkling Brut Rose. My thoughts -
🍾 "Britpop" is both an appalling name and also incredibly apt. Good on him, and he is clear it's not actually manufactured on his farm.
🎵 There's Incredibly little Blur in the book, though I had seen enough hints to know that was going to be the case. He is fun to read nevertheless.
🎵 Something happened in Amsterdam pre-Wembley to earn him a "yellow card" from Damon/the band, but he doesn't say what. ("A bit of a Blur" was coy like this too, he knows on which side his Britpop is buttered.)
🎵 There was a Blur meet up in 2022 which went very badly, again no details are given.
🐮 The bits about the farm, and how some farm stuff works, and , were actually far more interesting than the Blur bits. Again I feel there are a lot of silent backers getting no mentions, but that's fine.

Thanks so much to & for the review (swipe left) and thank you to .co for staging, lighting and capturing the cover photo.

The party was at the highly ornamental (which had really friendly staff - thanks folks) and my mission was to play ~3 hours of bangers and then send the guests away to nearby for a late night "after-party". We went racing our of the blocks with Megan's desired first dances, Elton John and Pitbull, and I then piled on stuff like Cardi B, Dua Lipa, Travis Scott and even Ed Sheeran (I like his new one! Judge me! Sorry Megan I realised he was on your banned list!).

A tiny lull for the buffet provided a Will Smith megafan the chance to request both "Men in Black" and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme tune. Men in Black gave me an excuse to play some 80s fun around it e.g. Faith (since it's essentially Will Smith rapping over "Forget Me Nots") but I was less sure of how to prop up the Fresh Prince theme. I went with Warren G's Regulate, but actually mixed back out of it early. R Kelly is no longer an option!

Then it was a race to the finish with lashings of Proclaimers, Chappell Roan, and Kylie. As I mention in my wee after-wedding video (swipe til the end), a guest thanked me at the end expressing her delight that I played requests. The fact is I always will play requests if they're decent. That's the crucial detail. 😊 😎 🎵

It was a delight to be empowered by the Bride and Groom to play such a wide range of music. It's never straightforward to get a party going on again post-ceilidh but I took the challenge.

A Swedish chap told me I was too loud, a lady with a self-proclaimed "great ear" told me my speakers were positioned incorrectly, and some bridesmaids asked to pick the last set of songs and I said "no - I'm the expert". Who knew I could be so "tuff"? Must have been the calypso and establishment Edinburgh rubbing off on me 😊

Thank you so much & Andrew! Almost everything I played on the night was off the happy couples' ~6 hour suggested list. They had lovely guests who asked for atrocious records but in the most polite way. I mostly (mostly!) refused, standards have to be maintained :-)

Somewhat surprise hits were the now classic "Where Are U Now" by the Dream Team, and "Blind Faith" by and .music.

First Dance was the beautiful "Be With You" by and closers were "Angels" by daft Robbie and Loch Lomond.

"Pink Pony Club" is now THE most ferocious banker in the wedding DJs arsenal and it will be interesting to see how long its power holds. I don't even play any Sabrina Carpenter as she seems to clear dancefloors. It's intriguing.

is a smashing venue but is also such an epic trek from OMTDJs HQ that I wonder if I will ever be back!

Ps didn't manage to obtai permission from official photographers .co to use any of their snaps so all photography is by yours truly (aye I know you could tell).

This was going to be simply a post about How To Never Have A Hit by but it's such a London book I might as well include my own snaps from a weekend in the city. Me and experienced Van Gogh and also experienced , which was hilarious. Main purpose of the trip was 's big 40th bash which was absolutely brilliant and certainly the best I've ever been fed at any birthday party. There were no public classes (boo!) but I got a pic for Peloton fanboy of the hunky new instructor.

How Not To Have A Hit is the confessions of Alan Tyler of The Rockingbirds and various other niche/indie/NME/country/Camden Falcon-ish 90s and noughties groups, including Famous Times. It's less jovial than you'd expect but that's ok. It's a frank and grittier counterpoint to 's witty memoirs from almost exactly the same period. I found the book in which is always a treasure trove of unexpected delights. The foreword by was the hook 👍 🎸

The Club King by Peter Gatien. A solo eye-patched impresario who ran The Tunnel, The Palladium, and various clubs named "Limelight" in New York City, Miami & beyond.

The technical details are all very interesting but there's no sense of jeopardy with every club being a roaring success, breaking - to his credit - race, sexuality and gender barriers. I'd also have liked more details of special or weird moments - he mentions that one of the clubs had a puma under a glass dancefloor, and there must have been loads more things like that. The impression given is of high professionalism, planning and efficiency.

There's also no mention of drugs until he eventually concedes he would lock himself away in a hotel suite once a year for a weekend of co***ne 'n' hookers. See - everything he did was planned and efficient, even his binges.

Overall this is a total page-turner which takes an unexpected twist into courtroom intrigue as NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani tries to close his clubs and eventually succeeds in imprisoning Gatien for 2 years for tax evasion. 4/5
