Did you know that mirror carp were created by monks, not nature? In medieval Europe, monks began breeding wild common carp in their monastery ponds for food. They preferred fish with fewer scales because they were easier to clean and prepare. Through generations of selective breeding, a genetic mutation emerged that caused irregular scale growth—giving us the distinctive mirror carp we know today.

Unlike their wild, fully scaled relatives, mirror carp are a true product of human intervention. These fish tended to grow faster and develop chunkier bodies, making them perfect for early aquaculture. What began as a practical solution for the dinner table has evolved into one of the most iconic and prized species in modern carp fishing.

Record shaker

Despite most carp anglers hating bream, when they get this big, they aren't as disliked!

Scott Crowhurst landed this 21lb 15oz bream while on a carp fishing session, only realising just how big it was when he got home and checked the record...

I get one day off a week, had a couple of pints with a few mates then went fishing, sat in the rain, lost my spomb first cast (I did get it back tho) got the odd beep on the alarms, then a snotbag 😪
Maybe I should have stayed in the pub tonight 😂

18 hours 18 runs 13 Carp on Thursday through to Friday. First night since European trip at the end of last September.
Biggest was 17lb 14oz which is good for out of here and there was a mist on the lake and frost in the van this morning. Most runs came from a spot at 8 wraps over a bed of corn boilies and pigeon conditioner fishing a trimmed down boilie topped with a bit of pink pop up.
