I've been posting recently about a new deal option for me to produce an album for grassroots original artists, but also to provide some help and guidance on how to tour for the purposes of making money and possibly being able to make a sustainable income.
This article really articulates well how financially difficult trying to be a bonefide music artist can be, and especially around touring.
It's never been easy, but from my work touring venues with bands, and keeping an loose eye on crewing industry, It's fairly easy to see why it's probably more difficult than it's ever been - every part of the chain just wants/needs too much money. And it makes it harder the more people that are part of that chain.
We have to remember that the money to pay for the venues, artists, marketing, travel, accommodation, crew, management - it all comes from the ticket buying customer. And if we price them out, they'll disappear... and you only have to look around the towns at 12am to see that fewer people are opting to go out.
I see the entire financial journey in my work tour managing and performing with DS:UK -THE Dire Straits Tribute Show, 50 Years of Fender Show - Celebrating the Fender Stratocaster and Seriously Collins - Phil Collins Tribute & Genesis Tribute, and I'm about to start working with a couple of new shows through Prestige Sound to help build their touring profile too. So I know how tight it is for everyone - it's why I'm very careful to manage costs.
But I've also seen how possible it is to tour weekly across the country and I'm sure that how we tour can be transferred over to original artists as well, without the need for loads of crew, catering, management, etc - just tour with the basics. After all, the audience are there to see and hear music/bands that they love and choose to support. I'm sure it's nice when it's big and grand, but that's expensive and it's not like it's getting any easier.
Hence why I'm offering help while we work together to produce your album(s) - creating products to sell and giving you the knowledge/tools to manage yourself and create a regular performance schedule that has the potential to create a sustainable income.
Of course - there's significant work to be done before you have a following you can monetise, but that's the nature of our business. We have to build our customer base, and it'll take time, but there's plenty to practical techniques and activities that will make that happen.

Music sales may be booming, but even acts like Everything Everything, Sports Team and Kate Nash aren't getting rich on it
