Tech update - LiDAR scanning
-----------------------------------
This is a FARO Focus scanner, and it’s a key piece of kit our students use to capture real-world data for film and game projects. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is used for Reality Capture in games and visual effects, where its primary purpose is to create precise 3D digital models of real-world environments and objects.
Specifically, in VFX and Games Art, LiDAR is essential for:
Environment Capture / Digital Twins: Quickly and accurately scanning sets, locations, or even entire city blocks to create a point cloud—a highly detailed 3D blueprint. This data is converted into a digital twin that artists can use for:
Set Extension: Seamlessly building on a physical set with CGI elements.
Matchmoving/Camera Tracking: Providing the precise spatial data needed to lock virtual cameras to live-action footage, ensuring CG elements align perfectly with the filmed plate.
Virtual Production (VP): The accurate 3D geometry from a LiDAR scan is fundamental for building the virtual backgrounds rendered in real-time on LED screens (using platforms like Unreal Engine), which is the core of VP.
Asset Creation: Scanning detailed real-world props and large objects to create high-fidelity 3D models for games or film.
This technology is a huge time-saver and increases the realism massively compared to manual modelling and measurement!
