On July 15, 2012, the world of mountaineering watched as one of its brightest stars embarked on what she believed would be her greatest triumph. Elena Castillo, a civil engineer from Arequipa, Peru, with a radiant smile and an unwavering passion for the heights, set out to conquer Alpamayo, one of the world's most beautiful and treacherous mountains. This was no reckless adventure; Elena had spent years perfecting her craft, studying every detail, every potential setback.
