One of the earliest signs of project misalignment is surprisingly simple: ask different people what the priority is and listen to their answers.
If the answers are different, don’t assume people are just communicating badly. Find out why.
As a Project Manager, check:
* What are we actually trying to achieve?
* What is the priority right now — and has it changed?
* Which deliverables are critical to the outcome?
* What has been deprioritised?
* Who made the decision, and has it been communicated consistently?
Then test the understanding across the team. Don’t just send another project update and assume everyone is aligned.
Misalignment can quickly turn into competing priorities, duplicated work, delayed decisions and missed deadlines.
A strong PM doesn’t just communicate the priority. They check that people have understood it in the same way.
