After Crisis Meeting:

Kwa Kwa Bakundu Gets New Chief

The village of Kwa Kwa Bakundu in Mbonge Subdivision, Meme division of the South West region, has a new chief.

Tukwa Simon was designated and homologated after a crisis meeting on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, that held in the conference room of the Divisional Office for Meme in kumba.

The meeting was chaired by the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Meme division, Chamberlin Ntou'ou Ndong.

It was attended by various stakeholders including the President of the Bakundu Chiefs' Conference, His Majesty Moango Misodi Andreas.

The SDO noted he deemed it necessary to convene the meeting to seek a long-lasting solution to the chieftaincy crisis in Kwa Kwa Bakundu village.

He noted thar Kwa Kwa Bakundu is one of the most affected villages in the socio-political upheavals in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.

His intervention in the tussle, he said, as provided by the Chieftaincy Laws of 15th July, 1977, comes after attempts by the Divisional Officer, DO, of Mbonge Subdivision failed to put an end to it.

"In case of contestations in such a situation, the one with authority shall have the last say. In this case, it is the SDO," he said.

Ntou'ou Ndong noted when he became the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme division in March 2017, he requested from all the chiefs in his area of command, the list of kingmakers in their chiefdoms.

Those on the list are the ones to elect a new chief in case of a vacancy of the throne.

Surprisingly, he revealed, those who elected the former Chief-designate, Dioni Simon, were not on the list submitted by late Chief Tukwa Manfred Mekumba of Kwa Kwa Bakundu village, when he was still alive.

To resolve the crisis, the SDO requested contenders to the throne of Kwa Kwa Bakundu village to present their royal lineage to the throne.

This can be either a prefectoral order or an official gazette.

Only the new chief presented a prefectoral order.

CCC Kumba Ex-Students Hold General Assembly

Ex-Students of the once famous Cameroon College of Commerce, CCC Fiango, Kumba, now Cameroon College of Commerce High School, CCCHS, have taken firm commitments to bring changes to their 64 years old alma-mater.

The ex-students met for the 3rd General Assembly on Saturday 28 June 2025, at the Kumba I Council Hall.

The President General of the alumni association, Kingue Esongami Joseph, presided over the meeting, which was attended among others by the host chapter President, Ngamkam Abel, the chapter Presidents of Buea and Limbe, and members of the alumni.

Addressing the ex- students, the national president noted that the association should be greater than what it presently is, if not for some ex-students who are feet-dragging to join the association that was created on 12 October 2024 in Buea.

He said another challenge they face is the lack of finances to run their activities efficiently. He stressed that maintenance work need to be carried out in the school to give it a new facelift. This is because the roofs and other structures have been shattered with the youngest structure in the school constructed in 1969.

Speaking earlier, the principal of the school, Henry Ngwa, noted with delight that CCCHS Kumba is the lone surviving college west of the Moungo created in 1961 that is still functioning in Kumba.

He intimated that the day school has improved tremendously in size and population since the outbreak of the Anglophone conflict that started in 2017.

He noted that CCCHS which is the brain child of some West Cameroon elite, is still a citadel of learning as it scored 83.33 percent in the 2024 GCE Advance level and 68 percent in the Ordinary level.

For his part, the host chapter President said, the vision of the Alumni is to see that the student population increases to over 1000, adding that their competitors in the days of yore.

New Tax Law Renews Hope for Local Councils

Meme division tops chart in payment of taxes on physical persons.

Councils in Meme Division of the South West region have the hope to see their revenue boosted as the new taxation law now includes rules for collection of taxes for the local councils and regional authorities, as specified in Law No 2024-020 of 23 December 2024, which repeals law
No 2009/019 of 15 December 2009 relating to local taxes.

According to the Divisional Chief of Taxation for Meme, Alex Mbeaoh, who is also a councilor at the SW Regional Assembly, there is hope on the horizon for local councils in Meme with the putting in place of the new taxation law. He notes that henceforth councils shall witness a revenue boost Because local taxes shall be collected by the relevant government services and handed to the councils.

He explained that the new law relates to taxpayers with turnover of below fcfa 50 000 000.

He said the new comprehensive taxes have suppressed other taxes such as global tax and thorough fare etc.

He informed that taxpayers with turnover of above fcfa 50 000 000 (50 million) must have business licences and they pay their taxes at the regional taxation services.

All taxes are paid quarterly, as from March every fiscal year.

The new law is aimed to accord financial autonomy to councils as taxes collected for various councils are transferred into their respective accounts at the newly created accounts at the Post Office, after passing through the state treasury system.

The taxation official appealed to taxpayers to declare and pay their taxes promptly or they risk paying with fines.

He noted that a good number of the taxpayers have declared their taxes online without paying the same, while some others have paid incorrectly.

He however underscored that the new tax law permits councils to continue collecting some six taxes, including:- livestock slaughter fee,
