Wow, what a day! 🀩

Thank you so much to all of our wonderful members who took the time out of their schedules to join us in London as we launched the testing stage of our new ethical journalism training course.

Attendees were walked through the history of the course, shown some of the exciting guest speakers who will feature throughout, and listened to panels on the implementation of ethics in journalism and AI.

But most importantly, it was a chance for members to listen and learn from one another. Throughout the day, attendees shared ethical dilemmas they had encountered, discussed how such issues could be navigated, and talked through the policies they had implemented as a result.

We are continuing to work hard on the course, and this session will prove invaluable in the next stages! So, keep your eyes peeled for more news over the coming months! πŸ‘€

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who joined us on a panel: Matthew Eltringham, Veronica Gordon, Paul Hutchinson, Tchiyiwe Thandiwe Chihana, Eliz Mizon and Krishna Sood πŸ‘

And to our partners who made the day possible: Innovate UK, The University of Huddersfield, and Microsoft 🀝

Today marks - a moment dedicated to raising awareness for environmental protection. But how can we ensure the public receives accurate climate change news? 🌍

That question was one of the motivations behind this new report into the relationship between climate news in the UK and independent regulation!

Impress teamed up with the University of Glasgow and Dr Dominic Hinde to look at what proportion of the British public are accessing independently regulated climate news πŸ—žοΈ

The results show a desperate need for better collaboration across industries to ensure accurate climate change information reaches the public.

If publishers are not being held to high standards, it leaves room for climate misinformation and conspiracy theories to flourish.

You can read our report in full here! πŸ‘‰ https://bit.ly/43OnXlv

We are ready to work with all organisations and stakeholders who are passionate about improving the quality of climate change journalism in the UK πŸ’ͺ

What do marginalised communities want from journalism? Just ask them.

This month, Media Cymru released their News For All report, shining a light on how community-led journalism can rebuild broken trust between marginalised communities and the media.

In the next edition of our Impress Insights newsletter, Media Cymru research and news innovation fellow Shirish Kulkarni delves deeper into how the research came about and how journalists can start to build bridges with local communities across the UK.

It will be dropping into inboxes later this week πŸ‘€

It is well-known that public trust in journalism in the UK is incredibly low πŸ“‰

This is particularly true of marginalised communities - yet very little has been done by news organisations to build the necessary bridges with them to regain that trust.

Media Cymru's latest News For All report takes a closer look at the mistrust marginalised communities have for journalists, the importance of community-led journalism, and the changes they would like to see in the news production process.

These include:

🎀 Reporting with communities, rather than on them.

βœ… Taking care to ensure stories that concern marginalised communities are accurate.

πŸ—£οΈ Journalists being accountable when told they have done something wrong and taking steps to rectify it.

🀝 Taking a collaborative approach to reporting on marginalised communities, rather than simply extracting information.

Are these steps you would like to see more news organisations incorporate?

This can no longer be dismissed as simply being a case of a few bad apples.

A statement from Impress after News Group Newspapers and Prince Harry reached a settlement.

NGN admitted to and apologised for serious breaches of privacy, phone hacking and misuse of private information by the Sun and the News of the World.

Without rigorous and transparent accountability, the world of journalism risks surrendering public trust forever.

πŸ€– Everyday, more and more news publishers are turning to Artificial Intelligence as a productivity tool.

Whether it is mounting costs or the pursuit of efficiency, every outlet has its reasons for utilising the burgeoning technology.

But rushing to use generative AI comes with its risks, not least the impact it could have on public trust.

Journalism is already one of the least trusted industries among members of the public in the UK.

Our News Literacy Report showed that people are eager to know more about how news is produced, and that includes how technologies like AI are being integrated into those processes.

A study from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that only 7% of the British public believe editors always check generative AI outputs before publishing.

At Impress, our Standards Code requires publishers to ensure editorial oversight over any AI-generated content. It is also requires publishers to clearly flag any content that has used AI in its production.

If we want to improve trust in journalism, publishers have to be more willing to offer a glimpse behind the curtain and share their news-gathering processes with the public.

Mark Zuckerberg's decision to remove factcheckers from Meta risks exacerbating the explosion of misinformation and disinformation we have seen in recent years.

The world’s online spaces need strong interventions, not weaker ones.

The issue of online mis- and disinformation remains an urgent blight on society and one that has serious real-world impacts on individuals and communities.

On the decision, Impress Chair Richard Ayre said: β€œDecades ago American journalism pioneered factcheckers to aim for accuracy in news.

"Today, any online platform that regards the search for truth as β€œmission creep” is choosing to be complicit in misleading and misdirecting the public."

More needs to be done to tackle it - not less - and Impress remains open and willing to work with anyone who shares this vision."

We are excited to be launching an Ethical Journalism Training Programme! 🀩

Poor ethical standards have become more entrenched in recent years as a failing economic model for news has led the industry to cut corners, prioritise clickbait and downplay the ethical challenges of publishing online.

Thanks to a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with The University of Huddersfield and funding from Innovate UK, 2023 saw Dr Beth Parkes join the Impress team to head up the creation of the course.

"With public trust in news media at an all-time low, alongside increasing levels of disinformation in the media landscape, responsible and ethical journalism is needed more than ever before," Parkes said.

"This course will be suitable for journalists at all stages of their careers and seeks to encourage greater ethical practice and awareness in the industry."

The news comes with the release of our 2023-24 Annual Report, featuring news of the training course as well as reviews of campaigns in news literacy, election misinformation and more!
