stories, experiences, memories, your photos, videos and updates from the town - and we'll share the best for our fans to see. The University and golfing links vie for the history stakes - both having six centuries of heritage under their belt, but the town has so much more to offer ...

The town takes its name from Saint Andrew, the Apostle. There's been a church here since the 8th century - and probably before - and a Bishopric since the 1200s. The history and heritage of the town is palpable as you walk the cobbled streets and discover ancient buildings, monuments and outstanding exhibits in the town's museums. St Andrews grew to the west of the cathedral. Now a ruin, it is still an imposing sight - and commands the east end of the town's main streets: North Street, Market Street and South Street - all converging on the cathedral site. The remaining towers and steeples can be seen from miles around. The ancient harbour is a must visit - on the north edge of East Sands beach - as is St Andrews Castle that looks out to St Andrews Bay and across the shoreline to the stunning West Sands Beach. St Andrews is known worldwide as the 'home of golf' - mainly because the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (est. 1754) oversees the game's legislative authority in all four corners of the world bar the USA & Mexico. But it is the links - the land that links the sea with the town and farmland - that makes the 'home' so special. The land is owned by the town - and has been since an Act of Parliament enshrined it in public ownership in 1894. It ensures it is retained for the use of golfers - and it is the most used venue for The Open Championship - the oldest of golf's four major championships. The Old, New Course, Jubilee, Eden & Castle Courses are amongst the best ranked in the world - and in the countryside around the town are many more fantastic golf courses that make the town and our area a magnet for golfers worldwide. Today, the town welcomes students, academics, golfers and holiday makers from home and abroad. It is a great home for some fantastic businesses who have invested in St Andrews.

This shot is a bit of a gem. Work on building the hotel started in 1968 - it was known as the ‘chest of drawers’ for obvious reasons!

Ironically, British Transport Hotels recognised the opportunity to create a destination hotel alongside the Old Course on land that was freed up - by the railway’s closure!

For those who love their architecture, perhaps the most impressive part of the new hotel was below ground: numerous ‘underground floats’ acting as a counterbalance to the sand beneath the foundations. The entrance was then on the course side - where the conservatory now stands - and included parking right alongside the Road Hole. Ouch!

The hotel proved very popular. The entrance was switched to the south side and ‘wings’ were added east and west - eventually joining the hotel to the former station master’s house - that became the Jigger Inn. British Transport Hotels sold the site some 43 years ago.

In subsequent years it saw different owners and went through various changes. Ahead of the 1984 'Seve' Open, Princess Anne reopened the hotel following major works and refurbishment on the property.

Twenty years on, the current owners, Kohler Co, bought the hotel. In their 21st year, they continue to invest in the property, grounds and a combined award-winning staff that tops 500.

It is 100 years since London North Eastern Railway created this poster promoting St Andrews ... an iconic image of a woman golfer looking towards the The R&A. Little has changed in that view today.

It is one image in The R&A World Golf Museum's immersive galleries which bring to life the past, present and future of golf. Thousands of fascinating objects reveal hidden stories of the game and personalities ...

"Explore over 400 years of golf’s history: connect with the medieval origins of the game and discover its global development through golf’s earliest societies, evolving equipment, groundbreaking fashion and world-class championships – including golf’s oldest major, The Open."

Just yards from the first tee of the iconic Old Course, you can dine atop the award-winning museum in The Niblick Restaurant & Bar enjoying views of The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, historic links and the stunning sweep of West Sands beach.

Check out the museum's diary of events via https://bit.ly/WorldGolfMuseum-Events or pop in when next in town - and enjoy time out at the Niblick.
