10/12/2025
The 10th of December 2025 is the 77th anniversary of the adoption of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This groundbreaking agreement provided inalienable rights to all people. The key tenets are Life, Liberty, Security:
Right to life, freedom from slavery/torture.
Legal Rights: Recognition before law, fair trial, presumption of innocence, remedy.
Movement & Asylum: Free movement, right to seek asylum.
Identity: Nationality, marriage, family.
Belief & Expression: Freedom of thought, conscience, religion, opinion, expression, assembly, association.
Governance: Participate in government, free elections.
Economic & Social Rights: Social security, work (unions), rest, adequate living standards, education.
Culture: Participate in cultural life, enjoy arts, benefit from science.
It is built on core principles of universality, indivisibility, and interdependence, meaning that rights belong to everyone, are interconnected (one affects all), are equally important, without discrimination, emphasizing inherent dignity and state responsibility to protect.
It came about as a result of the horrors of the second world war, but still, so often we see the removal of these rights, by governments, during conflicts, by people who should love and protect others, and by those with criminal intent. It is the responsibility of all to uphold these rights. The rights come with responsibility for the rights of others.
