A post shared by our member, Kate Moore , who has done so much to try to clear the world of cluster munitions. Thank you Kate for remembering the cost.
"The work continues! It will go on many years after my passing.
After the cessation of every war the work begins to clear the lethal harvest of mines, cluster munitions and other unexploded ordnance. Making land safe so life can continue.
Proud to have been a member and worked with the CMC since its formation. Also to have supported the ICBL for 25 years."

On World Humanitarian Day, ICBL-CMC honours deminers and humanitarian workers risking their lives to make communities safe from landmines and cluster munitions.

Mine action programs are underfunded, which means fewer teams in the field, slower clearance, and communities forced to live longer with fear.

Deminers courage deserves more than words of praise. It deserves sustained support and the resources needed to finish the job.

The Government has announced that it will criminalise po*******hy that depicts acts of strangulation.
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/strangulation-in-po*******hy-to-be-made-illegal
The announcement follows the independent p**n review, 'Creating a Safer World', conducted by Baroness Gabby Bertin, which found that po*******hy has effectively established strangulation during s*x as a ‘s*xual norm’ and the belief that strangling a partner non-fatally during s*x is ‘safe’ despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. The move has been welcomed by women’s campaign groups, as well as the
Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), which held talks with Baroness Bertin and whose work was widely referenced in her report.

At Soroptimist Stafford we have our own Lendwithcare scheme, supporting women around the world and a number of members lend on their own too. Such is our commitment to empowering other women.

As one of the world’s leading women’s organisations, raising women and girls out of poverty is one of Soroptimists charitable objects. That’s why for over 4 years we have been working with Lendwithcare and Kiva, charities which provide a “revolutionary way to help people to work their way out of poverty with dignity.”

We work with women entrepreneurs in low-income countries, who have had the seed of a good business idea but need help to get it off the ground. With Lendwithcare’s help, they set out their plans, ensure viability and we step in to help with a small loan to get them started.

⚖️ Not just for show, but for change

💭 What’s the issue?
Current gender equality efforts are often symbolic—mere “box-ticking.” SIGBI is calling for mandatory Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs) in legislation, budget decisions, and policy-making across all government levels. This push is about going beyond words and delivering measurable change.

👩‍⚖ Why GIAs?
GIAs help reveal how decisions impact people differently based on gender identifying, preventing, or mitigating negative outcomes and advancing equality.

✨ Our message:
“We have the laws. We need the will. It’s time for gender equality to move from aspiration to implementation.” — Ruth Healey, SIGBI President.

🤝 How to get involved:
– Join your local SIGBI club.
– Take part in lobbying initiatives
—reach out to your MP or Councillor.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
30 July

Every country in the world is affected by human trafficking
Human trafficking is a crime that exploits women, children and men for numerous purposes including forced labour and s*x. Since 2003 the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has collected information on about 225,000 victims of trafficking detected worldwide. Globally countries are detecting and reporting more victims and are convicting more traffickers. This can be the result of increased capacity to identify victims and/or an increased number of trafficked victims.
In 2006, responding to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) request for intergovernmental agencies to further cooperate in order to strengthen technical assistance provided to countries in the area of human trafficking, the Government of Japan hosted a coordination meeting of international organizations working to counter trafficking in persons. The participating organizations (ILO, IOM, UNICEF, UN Women, UNHCR and UNODC) decided to continue the effort initiated and proposed the creation of a coordination group. The Inter-Agency Coordination Group Against Human Trafficking (ICAT) was formally established in March 2007.
In 2010, the General Assembly adopted the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, urging Governments worldwide to take coordinated and consistent measures to defeat this scourge. The Plan calls for integrating the fight against human trafficking into the UN’s broader programmes in order to boost development and strengthen security worldwide. One of the crucial provisions in the Plan is the establishment of a UN Voluntary Trust Fund for victims of trafficking, especially women and children.
The Trust Fund facilitates effective, on-the-ground assistance and protection to victims of trafficking, through grants to specialized NGOs. It aims to prioritize victims coming from a context of armed conflict and those identified among large refugee and migration flows.
In 2013, the General Assembly held a high-level meeting to appraise the Global Plan of Action. Member States also adopted resolution A/RES/68/192 and designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons. This resolution declared that such a day was necessary to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”
In September 2015, the world adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and embraced goals and targets on trafficking in persons. These goals call for an end to trafficking and violence against children; as well as the need for measures against human trafficking, and they strive for the elimination of all forms of violence against and exploitation of women and girls.
Another important development is the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants, which produced the groundbreaking New York Declaration. Of the nineteen commitments adopted by countries in the Declaration, three are dedicated to concrete action against the crimes of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
Every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit, or destination for victims. Traffickers the world over continue to target women and girls. The vast majority of detected victims of trafficking for s*xual exploitation and 35 per cent of those trafficked for forced labour are female. Conflict further exacerbates vulnerabilities, with armed groups exploiting civilians and traffickers targeting forcibly displaced people
