A Tameside theatre has welcomed a financial boost from an arts charity named after a legendary comedian, singer and writer.

Hyde Festival Theatre says it is “thrilled” to have received a grant from The Victoria Wood Foundation.

The charity, formerly known as The Victoria Wood Charitable Trust, was set up following the death of Victoria Wood in 2016 from cancer at the age of 62.

A Tameside girl’s legacy lives on through a charity in her name which continues to raise awareness and funds for community defibrillators.

Love of Lacey was established after seven-year-old Lacey Warburton’s death in 2018 in her father’s arms after playing during a camping trip near Halifax.

A coroner ruled Lacey’s death was down to Sudden Unexplained Death in Children, with Lacey possibly having had a weak heart.

Young people aged 16 and 17 will soon be able to vote in local, regional and general elections for the first time, under new plans announced by the government.

The move delivers on a promise made in Labour’s manifesto last summer and is set to be in place ahead of the next general election.

Ashton-under-Lyne MP and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said the change is about giving young people a voice in decisions that affect their lives and strengthening trust in politics.

A Hyde store wants to introduce a launderette into its current floorspace.

Tamim Jan, of Australian Wines on Talbot Road in Newton, has applied to Tameside Council to separate the area and place 10 machines, plus a toilet and storage space, in it.

And documents supporting the scheme believe giving it the go ahead can boost both its value to the community and interaction between those who live in it.

Ashton-under-Lyne and Stalybridge are to become the national model for transport-led regeneration as part of a new strategy for the Greater Manchester area.

Plans for the next 10 years were announced by the region’s mayor, Andy Burnham, on Tuesday, July 9.

And Tameside is set to see one of its major developments as a new Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) will be created covering the towns.

It will also focus on transport as the Bee Network is set to grow.
