The Decline of American Empire: Historical Patterns and Future Implications
We discuss how the United States is experiencing imperial decline, drawing parallels from the past 100 years of history. We examine two key characteristics that plague declining empires: micro-militarism abroad, where military interventions attempt to recapture fading global power, and domestic political instability including coups. We explore how American politics have become increasingly irrational and contorted, and we argue that recognizing our status as a declining empire helps explain current international behavior. We suggest this period of decline and irrationality will likely persist for another decade or two until American power finally diminishes.
