UKCY News - The UK Cypriot News Site Read the latest on UKCY NEWS, the UK Cypriot News Site at ukcynews.com - a news site for ALL UK Cypriots. A digital newspaper in your pocket.

You can read it on your mobile. It uses mobile responsive technology. And you can key in your own comments. UKCY NEWS is a news and information website focusing on UK Cypriots and everyone interested in the UK Cypriot community and Cyprus. It follows the mobile/tablet revolution, which makes it ideal for reading on android mobile telephones, iphones tablets and ipads and, therefore, deserves the d

escription "The Mobile Newspaper for UK Cypriots". Statistically confirmed evidence shows that a rapidly increasing number of people in the UK and some other countries read their newspapers on their mobiles or tablets rather than in paper/printed form. Wherever you go your "mobile newspaper" will follow you in your pocket and will be much easier to handle. This is definitely the newspaper of the future (and, hopefully, you will opt for using it in the present). Another advantage, when it comes to UKCY NEWS, is that this is a newspaper for "the new UK Cypriot Community" - "the 3rd Generation Plus" UK Cypriot Community - whose best language is English rather than Greek. Whether we like it or not, it's a fact and nothing can be achieved by just closing our eyes (or our ears in this case) and pretending that all UK Cypriots are fluent Greek speakers. We can only build on reality and this is the first issue that has to be raised and faced in the UK Cypriot community if we don't want to lose our identity and our way completely. And that brings us to the wider aims of UKCY News - the reasons that have brought us into existence. We want to give expression and coverage to issues, news and subjects that existing community media have failed to express and cover. We respect and appreciate existing community media and their long, hard work and struggle for our community. We don't want to be antagonistic towards them. We want to make our own contribution humbly and quietly. We want to work constructively. But we want to focus on the real lives of the real UK Cypriots. We appeal to all our friends to help us achieve these aims by simply visiting our website and trying to see if there is anything interesting or useful for them and their lives.

Anti-terrorist rhetoric is used in Erdogan's Turkey as a context for "legitimising" all kinds of attacks against human rights and political freedoms.
Can Koçak, a media and journalism lecturer at the University of Sussex, alleges that Keir Starmer's government in their efforts to increase trade and co-operation with Turkey could potentially be influenced by that rhetoric.
According to him, such rhetoric “provided context" for a Metropolitan Police raid on 27 November 2024 at the Kurdish Community Centre in North London", which by implication, in his opinion, was unjustified.

"While Erdoğan wages war on Turkey’s workers’ movement by jailing socialist MPs, the British police’s harassment of London’s Kurdish community reveals how much this authoritarianism has stretched to Britain".…

If we want to be objective, the key to the solution of the Cyprus problem is in the hands of Turkey and Cyprus joining NATO is not going to change that in any way.

In any event, the "British Sovereign Bases", which are also used by the USA, offer everything NATO needs in Cyprus, whether we like it or not, and the Republic of Cyprus joining NATO is not going to add anything or benefit Cyprus in any sense.

Thinking NATO is going to put pressure on Turkey is an illusion. The only choice available (if one still exists at all) is a BBF solution and that is going to be decided in the near future or goodbye.

Make up your minds that Turkey is becoming a regional power and Cyprus cannot possibly become a "new Israel".

Cyprus can be reunited by negotiation only through compromise and real trust between the two major communities and between Greece and Turkey. In the longer term, Cyprus needs good relations and co-operation with both Greece and Turkey.

The founding president of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, did the right thing in "aligning" Cyprus with the Non-Aligned Countries.

Losing more of our sovereignty, independence and bargaining power and many important friends will be the only consequence of joining NATO.

What we need is a peaceful, prosperous, federal Cyprus, without foreign armies, with only a federal defensive force, not exposing ourselves to potentially more risks by joining an aggressive alliance and becoming accessories to wars and barbarities.

Christodoulides and Tatar are invited to a meeting by Guterres on Tuesday 13th August - Tuesday and 13 is an unlucky coincidence according to Greek superstition. Let's hope that it will turn out to be lucky this time...

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has accepted an invitation from UN Secretary-General António Guterres for a trilateral meeting on the Cyprus issue on August 13th. First of all, let’s make one thing clear. We don’t support the Russian invasion in Ukraine. We don’t support the invasion of any country by any country. We don’t support war. We don’t support aggressive military alliances. We don’t believe that war ever solves problems. It only creates more.

Once we made that clear, we would like to ask a couple of questions. Who provoked this war. How did this war start?

We don’t support the Russian invasion in Ukraine. But let's ask: Who provoked this war. How did this war start?

It now seems almost certain that Donald Trump will win the next USA presidential elections and a new picture will emerge. Mr Orbán’s prediction stands a particularly good chance of being proved right. Why?

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and former US President Donald Tramp had talks "about chances of peace". Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on 18/07/24 released a letter he addressed to the heads of European Union countries where he presented his impressions from a recent series of visits...

IS IMMIGRATION "GOOD" OR "BAD"?
Despite the usual rhetoric of immigrants “taking our jobs” (an argument cynically and incorrectly employed by populist propaganda), reports by experts show clearly that the economies of wealthy countries (USA, UK and Europe) benefit from immigration, as explained in a Financial Times article.

Click and find out why. By paying a brief visit to UKCY NEWS, you help it to carry on being published.

UKCY NEWS, The News Service for All UK Cypriots

Immigration is the number one political concern for Americans for the third month in a row, wrote Rana Foroohar on 8 July in the Financial Times. Something similar is happening in the UK, in our native country, Cyprus, and in Europe generally. Immigration has…
