We had a brilliant time exploring the fort this weekend. There are tunnels to wander through, loads of history to discover and some seriously impressive guns and artillery to see.

But the highlight for the kids had to be the ๐€๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฒ-๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ž ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐š๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž! ๐Ÿช–๐Ÿ’ช

For just ยฃ3.50, children can take on a fun military-style obstacle course โ€” climbing, crawling and testing themselves along the way. Ours absolutely loved it!

๐Ÿฐ ๐€ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ: Fort Nelson was built in the 1860s to defend Portsmouth from a French invasion that never came. It was later used as an am******on store during World War II and today is home to the Royal Armouriesโ€™ national collection of artillery.

Looking for a budget-friendly day out with the kids? This one is definitely worth knowing about! ๐Ÿ‘€

Entry to Fort Nelson is ๐…๐‘๐„๐„, with just ยฃ3 to pay for onsite parking.

We visited this weekend and had such a good time exploring the underground tunnels, walking around the fort and getting a close-up look at the enormous historic guns.

The kidsโ€™ favourite part though? The ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐š๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

For only ยฃ3.50, children can have a go at an army-inspired obstacle course packed with climbing, crawling and plenty of challenges. Such a simple idea, but loads of fun!

Fort Nelson also has a fascinating history. It was constructed in the 1860s as part of Portsmouthโ€™s defences against a possible French invasion and was later used to store am******on during World War II. Today, itโ€™s part of the Royal Armouries and houses an incredible collection of artillery.

Did you know you can sail to some amazing destinations straight from Southampton? ๐Ÿšข

This summer holidays we boarded the **MSC Virtuosa** at Southampton for a 9-night, no-fly family cruise visiting **Brest, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Mรกlaga and Cรกdiz**.

One of the things we loved was that every stop was completely different!

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท **Brest, France** โ€“ We decided to stay onboard and make the most of everything the ship had to offer.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น **Lisbon, Portugal** โ€“ We jumped aboard a Tuk Tuk tour and got to see some of the best bits of this beautiful city. Such a fun way to explore!

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฎ **Gibraltar** โ€“ We headed out on a sightseeing tour to see the famous monkeys ๐Ÿ’, St Michaelโ€™s Cave and the lighthouse.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ **Mรกlaga, Spain** โ€“ A proper beach day! โ˜€๏ธ Golden sand, sunshine and swimming in the sea.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ **Cรกdiz, Spain** โ€“ We made up our own walking tour, visiting the stunning Cรกdiz Cathedral, taking in the incredible rooftop views and finishing with the waterfall and gardens. One of our favourite days! โค๏ธ

And then there was the ship itselfโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคฉ

MSC Virtuosa is huge, with an incredible indoor promenade, loads of places to eat, several pools and plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

๐Ÿšข 5 destinations, 4 countries, 9 nightsโ€ฆ and no airport needed!

For our summer holiday this year we tried something a little different and sailed straight from Southampton aboard **MSC Virtuosa**.

Our 9-night adventure took us to **France, Portugal, Gibraltar and Spain**, and being able to start the holiday practically on our doorstep was a massive bonus!

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท **Brest** โ€“ Instead of heading ashore, we enjoyed a quieter day onboard and explored more of the ship.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น **Lisbon** โ€“ Probably one of the most fun ways weโ€™ve explored a cityโ€ฆ by Tuk Tuk! ๐Ÿ›บ We travelled around Lisbon taking in its colourful streets, landmarks and beautiful views.

๐Ÿ’ **Gibraltar** โ€“ A sightseeing tour took us up to see Gibraltarโ€™s famous monkeys, St Michaelโ€™s Cave and the lighthouse.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ **Mรกlaga** โ€“ Sometimes you just need a beach day! Golden sands, blue sea and plenty of swimming made this a really relaxing stop.

โ›ช **Cรกdiz** โ€“ We decided to explore this one ourselves on foot. We visited the beautiful Cรกdiz Cathedral, climbed up for some amazing rooftop views and wandered through the gardens to see the waterfall.

Back onboard, there was absolutely loads for the boys to do too!

Think huge water slides ๐Ÿ’ฆ, a ropes course suspended high above the sea ๐Ÿง—, football and basketball in the Sportplex, bowling ๐ŸŽณ, F1 racing simulators ๐ŸŽ๏ธ, interactive cinema, swimming pools and loads more.

Evenings meant theatre shows, live entertainment, parties, silent discos and some seriously impressive acrobatic performances.

And of courseโ€ฆ plenty of food! ๐Ÿ˜‹ Full board made things so easy with the kids.

Nine nights went far too quickly, but we came home with some brilliant memories and managed to see so much along the way.

We had such a lovely walk around Netley seafront, taking in the peaceful views, watching the boats sail past and enjoying plenty of nature along the way. โš“๐ŸŒŠ

Afterwards, we headed over to Netley Abbey โ€” and the ruins are absolutely stunning! Thereโ€™s so much to explore, and even better, itโ€™s ๐’„๐’๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’†๐’•๐’†๐’๐’š ๐’‡๐’“๐’†๐’† to visit.

Netley Abbey was founded in 1239 for Cistercian monks and today the impressive ruins are cared for by English Heritage. Itโ€™s a brilliant little piece of Hampshire history to explore.

We had such a lovely day exploring Gilbert Whiteโ€™s House & Gardens in the beautiful village of Selborne ๐ŸŒฟ

Thereโ€™s so much more here than we expected, with around 25 acres of restored 18th-century gardens and grounds to explore, alongside the museum telling the stories of pioneering naturalist Gilbert White and explorers Frank and Lawrence Oates.

Itโ€™s a brilliant family day out too. The kids really enjoyed following the childrenโ€™s trail as we made our way around, which added a bit of extra fun to the visit. โค๏ธ

One of our favourite parts was climbing to the top of ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐’๐’Š๐’ˆ-๐’๐’‚๐’ˆ ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’•๐’‰. The stepped path was cut into the steep chalk hillside of Selborne Hanger by Gilbert White and his brother in 1753. It takes around 10 minutes to climb through the beautiful ancient beech woodland, and youโ€™re rewarded with some fantastic views from the top. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿฅพ

๐Ÿ“– ๐‡๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐…๐š๐œ๐ญ: Gilbert White (1720โ€“1793) was an English clergyman and pioneering naturalist, best known for his book *The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne*, published in 1789. His detailed observations of wildlife helped make him one of the early pioneers of ecology and modern field biology.

After all that exploring, thereโ€™s also a lovely onsite cafรฉ serving hot drinks, cakes and sweet treats, ice creams and light lunch options. โ˜•๐Ÿฐ

Managed by the National Trust, this stunning Grade I listed Tudor country house dates back to the early 1500s and was built for William Sandys, Lord Chamberlain to King Henry VIII. Today itโ€™s surrounded by beautiful gardens, ancient woodland and picturesque lakes, making it the perfect place for a relaxing walk.

Whether youโ€™re exploring the historic house, enjoying the scenic trails or stopping for a coffee, thereโ€™s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

We had such a lovely day at Rotherwick Patch ๐ŸŒป

Itโ€™s a brilliant outdoor family day out, with entry giving you access to the beautiful sunflower fields, the Maize Maze complete with a Challenge Card, and the Play Patch for the little ones.

The sunflowers were absolutely gorgeous when we visited and made the whole place feel so colourful and summery. You can even pick your own to take home:

After exploring, we treated ourselves to some refreshments too. Thereโ€™s a selection of hot and cold drinks, cakes and ice creams available on site ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฆ

Robust pushchairs and wheelchairs are recommended as the paths are natural farm tracks and field surfaces, so they can be uneven and weather dependent. The Maize Maze itself isnโ€™t recommended for wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility due to the narrow and uneven paths.
