😨Getting chills just looking at the words conflict resolution?

🔱Had an excellent and challenging workshop at Hatch Enterprise, all about conflict and negotiation. My biggest takeaway was the difference between interests (what do you/they actually want?) and positions, and how to spot the difference (It's not easy and you'll need lots of practice)

⭕️As a Chinese woman, there's many stereotypes about the way I am expected to approach conflict. Either meek and subservient, or aggressive and 'tiger-mom-ish'. Interestingly enough, I am a lot more assertive in my professional life than personal, where I tend to avoid conflict at all costs. I think this comes from my practice of separating myself as a 'worker' and a 'person' — is this healthy❓

😪I came down with a quick and terrible cold last week, and after trying to push through for a few days, I decided to take the week off.
·⠀
🤔It was actually incredibly difficult to make that decision, I posted about it to a freelance community I belong to: what happens when you're a solopreneur and you get sick? Must everything grind to a halt? Do you try to keep going?
·⠀
😩Most of the people in my group advised me to take the time off and push back work deadlines — they reassured me that my clients would understand and that my health was the most important thing.
·⠀
🦢At the end of the day, it's the story of the golden goose all over again. I am the person who keeps the lights on for myself, and if I don't take care of the equipment, it will eventually break. The time off proved to be vital, both mentally and physically. This week I'm much better and ready to pick everything back up again.

👀A before and after of 'Treat Me Kind Internationals' rebrand.⠀

💻My client wanted to keep the bottle green illustrative elements, while bringing the rest of the identity into the 21st Century. ⠀
·⠀⠀
✏️I used a sturdy yet friendly typeface, Superclarendon Bold, to give a feeling of 'trustworthiness' and to ground the various sub-brands of the charity. Then I drew a lot of different animal illustrations, to be locked-up with the type. The illustration adds expressiveness and movement to the otherwise solid typography.⠀

🧰The client wasn't sure how many sub-brands TMK were going to launch, so creating this type+illustration system was a good way to provide them with maximum flexibility when thinking about the future.⠀

💡There are millions of different fonts/typefaces out there. How do you choose the right ones? ⠀

✏️After working as a designer for over 7 years, typography is still THE biggest challenge for me. The more I learn, the more I see how type is the foundation to most flat-surface design. It's so subtle, but has the ability to set the tone and mood of anything it touches.⠀⠀
·⠀⠀
📗As if choosing a typeface wasn't enough of a challenge, many times we are restrained by budgets. Fonts can be very expensive, and it's hard for start ups to justify spending a lot of money on something that's not as tangible as say, office space or production equipment.⠀
·⠀⠀
🧡Thankfully in the last few years, there have been some really good quality, open-source (read: free) fonts made available by Google.⠀
·⠀
🌦️It was a rainy day, and I decided to explore one of these free font pairings - as an exercise to stretch my own capacity, but also to showcase how you can 'match' two different fonts together, and use them to create a dynamic and modern looking brand.⠀

💻The fonts are Bio Rhyme and Cabin, and a quick Google search should yield direct download links for both. Have a play around, see if these fonts suit your brand. Tag me, I would love to see any experiments!⠀

☁️What are your values? Are they personal, professional, or both?

💼For last week's workshop, we wrote down our personal/company values. I read '7 Habits of Highly Effective People' a few years ago, and have whittled down my core values to four symbolic words

💎Rock: To be stable, steadily climbing toward the goal. To be a grounding and stabilising force. To honour promises, to be someone you can count on.

〰️River: To be a quiet powerhouse. No gimmicks, no hype, no tricks. A river is gentle, but changes the course of its landscape in due time.

☀️Light: To be optimistic and in good cheer. Not to coddle or sugarcoat, but to move forward in realistic optimism.

🌱Harvest: To practice radical generosity. To embed giving into the very core of your being and organisation.

🌟These values serve as my north star when making business or personal decisions, when interacting with clients or friends. I don't want to compartmentalise my morality: excusing unethical behaviour in the name of 'business'.

is an amazing resource for quality stock photography 🖼️ — however, it can feel like you're drowning in a sea of photos. One of the most useful, yet hard to find categories are 'background' images. These don't depict any subjects in particular, rather they provide a subtle texture to the background.

Here are some of the photos I've been using in my recent client work — Next week I will share my process of how to turn these stock images into texture backgrounds 👀 🖥️
