We depart the USA and are greeted in Canada with a fine on arrival. Despite the rocky start, Nova Scotia turns out to be an incredible place to sail and paddleboard. We explore stunning anchorages, navigate the shortest canal to Canada’s inland sea, and emerge into a world of lobster traps, big ships, and a giant fiddle....

After a few days anchoring in the beautiful East Arm in Bonne Bay, we have had a great day in Neddy Harbour. After having filled up the water and had friendly locals helping us pick up our new drone in Rocky Harbour, we are ready to move again.

Though we are tempted to stay and anchor for another couple of days 🤗

More annoying cartography issues, this time it’s C-Map with errors.. we are in Bonne Bay NL so not exactley a remote area where we expect a few errors and problems. We never rely on a single source or single device and always recommend this approach to fellow sailors.. below you can see exactley why😬

It took a while but we did work out the setting that is causing the error, never seen this before and it’s clearly a problem with the High Res Bathy’ that is included with this particular C-Map chart for North America. with it toggled on the chart in this location is significantly misaligned

LESSON for Now- keep the high res bathy toggled off .

The most annoying is that we purchased the C-MAP chart with an expectation that it was the most reliable.. clearly it is Not and I’m guessing C-Map like all the other cartography businesses is being starved of investment by it new owners who at the same time try to ram new unwanted features into their product.

Bay of Islands NL - Woods Island Harbour

As well as having one of us on the bow when we enter locations like this and taking a dead slow approach we increasingly use our drone to search for shoals, rocks and ledges when in less well charted waters, the water needs to be calm to get a good image but here is a great example of when it realy helps to visualise what’s under the surface.

There are ledges on both sides of the narrow entrance but around 3.5Meters through the channel between them.. the CCA guide has a little diagram that is not quite right, we found a bearing of 90° to be about right and that heading is a long way to the left of the shack near the waters edge. See additional photos, our entry track that followed the CCA guide and our suggested bearing to be in the deepest water in the comments.

Fantastic sheltered harbour, the dock appears to be in pieces but plenty of places to anchor, bottom is Mud.

Bay of Islands, Newfoundland.
We sailed up the remote west coast for 24hrs non stop and dropped anchor in Woods Island harbour. The sunset here is absolutely spectacular 😎

Sailing to the Statue of Liberty was a fantastic experience, but also stressful due to the amount of traffic and river currents. The trip down the coast offers a lot of historic places, but cruising in the US has become very expensive. An app for booking spots at the marinas has strange terms and conditions, that don't really fit the cruising life....

Nova Scotia has some fantastic anchorages and SUP places, but the charts are sometimes a little limited. This place is absolutely amazing, but there is only one depth measurement. There are however quite a few shallow spots - both turning the corner and in the channel.

Maskells Harbour in Bras D’Or Nova Scotia is a spectacular anchorage. Formerly known as as Boulaceet, the harbour is known by some sailors for its connection to the Cruising Club of America (CCA) because this was in where the idea for the CCA was born onboard the yawl “Elsie” in 1919. Three years later the CCA was officially formed.

This sheltered anchorage is great! Right outside there were white tops on the water and we had some terrible waves, but just as we turn into the (narrow) entrance the waves dropped.
It also helped when the wind later dropped and the sun came out🌊🌞

We have just seen, or rather narrowly missed colliding with our first North Atlantic Right Whale that surfaced just ahead of the boat and stuck its huge pectoral fin out of the water.. too busy avoiding it to take a photo but quite an encounter 🐳

Location - Green Island Lighthouse NS.
