Winifred Nicholson, Cumbrian Rag Rugs is on in the Main Gallery at the Hub in Sleaford until 16 Nov 2025. Including the exciting work of Rachael Matthews author of Rag Manifesto. Best known for her radiant paintings, Winifred Nicholson (1893–1981) was a leading figure in 20th-century British art. This exhibition reveals a lesser-known side of her creativity, her connection to the tradition of rag rug making in rural Cumbria.
Nicholson's work is featured in Rag Manifesto by Rachael Matthews, also from Cumbria. Rachael's piece, Lose Your Rag features in the exhibition. She created this from the discarded underwear of her in-laws, who had a tempestuous relationship – his indigo-dyed long johns are the sky, while her white knickers are the fireworks.
