In December 1944, the American 28th Infantry Division occupied an 85-mile front extending along Germanyโ€™s borders with Belgium and Luxembourg. There they repelled a desperate attempt by Hi**er to drive a wedge through the Allied lines to the port of Antwerp, which he believed would buy his scientists the time they needed to complete development of the super weapons forecast to turn the tide of the war.

This book explores the first-hand accounts of men of the 28th Infantry Division, who, with extraordinary tenacity, held the line through December 1944 and January 1945, and the chaplains who attended their religious needs. It assesses the efforts of the U.S. government to inspire its soldiers to fight for the American way of life, and how these efforts filtered onto the battlefield, shaping the resolve of the men asked, if necessary, to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The atom bombs dropped on Japan at the end of the Second World War opened the door to the nuclear age.

Seeing the potential for developing nuclear energy for the US Navy, Captain Hyman Rickover initiated a research programme that culminated in the launch of USS Nautilus, the worldโ€™s first nuclear-powered submarine. Meanwhile, ballistic missile technology was developing fast, but still relied on complex liquid fuels.
The US Navy partnered with the army to develop a ballistic missile for both services, but withdrew when solid fuels became a practical proposition. Under the leadership of RADM William Raborn, the US Navy set up its own project: the Polaris weapon system.

In 1960, the first missile-armed nuclear-powered submarine (SSBN) left on patrol, with forty more to follow. Two years later, when Britainโ€™s Blue Streak and Skybolt plans were cancelled, Harold Macmillan and John F. Kennedy agreed for Polaris to be supplied to the Royal Navy.

The Balti charts the story of one of Britainโ€™s most iconic dishes, from its birth in 1975 in Birminghamโ€™s Balti Triangle, through the height of its popularity in the 1990s, to its more recent demiseโ€”though not disappearanceโ€”in competition with a proliferation of burger joints and dessert parlours.

Interviews with chefs and owners give a rare insight into the running of family restaurants and the massive impact the balti has had on many of Birminghamโ€™s businesses, bringing back happy memories of the โ€˜balti boomโ€™ to aficionados in the city, the Black Country, and beyond.

As a slightly obsessed aficionado himself, Andy Munro shares some of the best and most authentic balti recipes out there, given by the greatest balti houses past and present, and delves into the manufacturing history and health benefits of the unique Birmingham-made carbon steel โ€˜balti bowlโ€™, which gives the curry its name.

The engagement at Halen on 12 August 1914 was planned on the previous successes of the cavalry of Frederick the Great. It was expected that the German Fourth Cavalry Division, which was magnificently equipped and trained, would charge to glory with sabers rattling against a belittled Belgian opposition. Instead, twenty-four German officers, 468 men and 843 horses were lost during no less than eight separate charges conducted that day. The disaster was hushed up by the Germans and largely escaped the notice of the British, who were yet to join the fight. Still, it was a hugely significant moment in the war and modern warfare in general, marking the end of the traditional use of cavalry on the battlefield.

As the world plunged into war in August 1914, two Kaiserliche Marine fleets and several detached cruisers lay isolated beyond the North Sea. There was little chance of reinforcement and resupply, yet these vessels posed a serious threat to British merchant shipping and naval superiority.
Their commanders often had to make hard decisions about what to do for their crews. Admiral Wilhelm Souchon had to cross the Mediterranean with a superior French and British fleet in pursuit. Admiral Maximilian Von Spee had to act on his initiative, a world away from his superiors, while German colonies and friendly shipping were being overtaken by Allied forces. Captain Karl Von Mรผller led the Emden on a daring campaign of commerce raiding, as did the commander of the Karlsruhe. Like old-fashioned corsairs, other cruisers also carried out raids. The Royal Navy expended enormous resources on trying to remove these threats, sometimes with disastrous results, as with the battle of Coronel on 1 November 1914.

The Cruel Sea, Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Zulu, Mandy and Ben-Hur were just a few of the scores of films that made him a top star. He built his fame not only on his acting ability, but also on his image as a symbol of British pluck and determination. His voice was unmistakable, with its whisky resonance and deep reserve of authority. As Sir Michael Parkinson remarked, โ€˜He was a formidable presence in the British film industry and later became one of those trustworthy film stars who an audience loved because he made them believe that everyone was as decent and brave as Jack Hawkins.โ€™ He fought some courageous screen battles, but his bravest fight came when throat cancer threatened his career.

Twenty-five-year-old Bob Keddie died on 16 May 1942 when his Catalina flying boat disappeared over the Norwegian Sea. He had been on a reconnaissance patrol for the protection of convoys carrying vital supplies to the Russians. No trace of him, his nine crew members, or his aircraft was ever found. For Diana, his young wife who was four months pregnant, the disappearance brought an abrupt and agonising end to a two-year love story, innocent and intense, played out mostly in letters overflowing with tenderness and anticipation for a future free of war. Weโ€™ve All Life Before Us tells Bob and Dianaโ€™s tragic but heartwarming story in their own words.
