Recent release 📖 - The Phantom Train: Deporting Prisoners from Occupied France

🚂 On 3 July 1944, a cattle train left Toulouse carrying 724 prisoners bound for Dachau. Among them was Italian antifascist Francesco Fausto Nitti. What should have been a 3-day journey turned into 2 gruelling months - bombed, rerouted, and stalled - making it the longest deportation from France in WWII.

Nitti kept a secret diary throughout the ordeal, which he still carried when he and fellow captives made a daring escape by slipping through the wagon’s floorboards at night. His log, first published in 1944, now appears in English as The Phantom Train - a haunting testament to endurance, resistance, and survival.

The Cruel Sea, Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Zulu, Mandy and Ben-Hur were just a few of the scores of films that made him a top star. He built his fame not only on his acting ability, but also on his image as a symbol of British pluck and determination. His voice was unmistakable, with its whisky resonance and deep reserve of authority. As Sir Michael Parkinson remarked, ‘He was a formidable presence in the British film industry and later became one of those trustworthy film stars who an audience loved because he made them believe that everyone was as decent and brave as Jack Hawkins.’ He fought some courageous screen battles, but his bravest fight came when throat cancer threatened his career.
