Pier 2 Pre-Auger Works Continue This Morning

Works on Pier 2 continued today on the central piling platform with ongoing pre-augering ahead of sheet piling installation.

The piling rig is drilling down through the formation to prepare the ground conditions for the next stage of works. This process helps reduce resistance during installation and ensures the GU16N sheet piles can be driven to the required levels as the Pier 2 cofferdam develops.

Later in the day, works on Pier 2 continued through into the next phase of piling activity (see separate post for that update).

Another step forward as the bridge foundations continue to progress across the Sturry Link Road project.

🌧️ PIER 2 PUSHES ON – RAIN OR SHINE! 🌧️

Today's progress at Pier 2 saw the start of sheet piling operations, following on from the pre-augering works. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the team kept moving, with these ground-level shots showing the scale of the operation in some pretty heavy rain.

These steel sheet piles will play a key role in the next phase of construction, and it's great to be able to share a different perspective of the work taking place on site.

A big thank you to VolkerGround Engineering for allowing me to use these photos and giving everyone following the project a closer look at today's progress from the ground.

A closer look at the haul road access at Shalloak Road.

This latest photo shows the start of the temporary haul road at the bottom of Shalloak Road, providing access to the northern section of the Sturry Link Road construction site and the future northern roundabout.

As construction traffic moves through this area, temporary pedestrian gates and crossing measures have been installed to help manage the interaction between site vehicles and the public.

It's another interesting part of the project to document, showing some of the temporary infrastructure needed to support a major construction scheme before the permanent road network takes shape.

🚛 First 6F5 Deliveries for the Haul Road

These latest images from north of the railway capture the first tipper lorries placing material for the new haul road.

The first photo shows a tipper on the developing route, while the second shows 6F5 being tipped at the haul road entrance.

6F5 is a recycled crushed aggregate commonly used in construction to provide a stable foundation for temporary haul roads and heavy site traffic.

This marks another stage in the formation of the haul road, which will support the movement of materials and machinery as work progresses across the site.

Foundation works continue to step forward across the structure

Pier 1 cofferdam works are now essentially complete, with the structure taking shape and ground containment established as planned. With that phase wrapped up, teams have now moved straight into the next stage of works at Pier 2, beginning pre-augering operations.

Pre-augering is being carried out to prepare the ground conditions ahead of piling, helping to establish the required formation and reduce resistance before main works commence. It’s a key early step in setting up the next pier sequence.

A steady progression along the structure, moving from one foundation stage into the next as the programme advances north through the site.

📸 Catching Up: Yesterday's North of the Railway Photos

A few more photos from yesterday's activity (8 June) have now been added to the North of the Railway album.

This latest batch includes:
🔸 Perimeter fencing being removed from the archaeology area.

🔸 Fencing being relocated to the site entrance off Shalloak Road.

🔸 Machinery deliveries north of the railway.

🔸 A couple of shots of the dozer making its first scrape up the future haul road towards the northern roundabout, covering around 350 metres.

FIRST CUTS NORTH OF THE RAILWAY

The moment work began.

This reel captures the D4 bulldozer making its first pass as construction gets underway on the haul road north of the railway.

The first strip of top vegetation and material being removed along what will become roughly 350 metres of haul road.

You'll see the dozer at work from several angles, following the machine as it steadily pushes its way along the route.

🎥 A small moment on site, but one that marks another visible step in the project.

From plans on paper to tracks on the ground.

The bulldozer is now on the move north of the railway, beginning the initial groundworks for the haul road. At the moment, it's stripping back the top surface and tracking up the route, pushing material ahead of the blade as the access road starts to take shape.

It's another milestone for the project and the start of some very visible changes on this side of the site.

(PART 4/4)

Welcome back to the Sturry Link Road Project community documentary.

This week, the project reaches another important milestone as the sheet piling operation moves from the southern abutment to the central piling platform. We follow the installation of the first GU16N sheet piles, take a closer look at the engineering behind the cofferdam works, and see how the same specialist equipment continues its journey across the site.

North of the railway, the future haul road takes a major step forward. Around 350 metres of corridor is now clearly defined with new boundary fencing, while archaeology reinstatement and ecological works continue to prepare the ground for the next phase of construction.

We'll also explain why the archaeological excavation can't simply be filled in overnight, how formation levels are carefully built and compacted, and why even a day of torrential rain doesn't necessarily stop a project of this scale from moving forward.

Despite some of the strongest winds and wettest weather we've seen so far, piling operations continued, steel deliveries kept arriving, and progress was made wherever site conditions allowed.

The episode finishes with an extended low-level drone flight across the entire project, from the southern roundabout and bridge works, through the ecology areas and out towards the future haul road north of the railway, giving a unique perspective of how much the landscape is changing.

And the story is far from over...

With an 180-tonne piling rig expected to arrive at the southern abutment and bulldozers set to begin constructing the northern haul road, the next chapter of the project promises to be one of the biggest yet.
