President Buhari is not running for re-election. He does not need to worry about fundraising or making powerful enemies in politics, the press or the private sector. I am sure he can look forward to a financially comfortable retirement. No favours can be called in. No debts need to be repaid. In some ways, he is completely free.

Would it not be the most perfect legacy for Mai Gaskiya – Mr Honesty – to leave his nation on the path to a corruption-free future?

The report states that some of the army officers deployed to the gate were “not fit and proper to serve” and recommends prosecuting certain policemen for their actions.

If as a nation, we are to move on from this, the darkest of days, prosecution of a handful of individuals will not be enough.

In the interests of truth and reconciliation, we need to instigate a cultural shift towards total transparency from our leaders – not least as the report’s conclusions are at odds with the contemporaneous conclusions of leading politicians.

As I have previously said, just think of the impact if Nigerian politicians of all parties and ethnicities came together as one to say the same thing. In 2021 – and beyond – internet access is a fundamental human right. As a both a digital democracy campaigner and an entrepreneur I am extremely alarmed by this decision, which is economically illiterate and democratically unacceptable – President Buhari must reconsider before serious damage is done to both Nigeria’s economy and our international reputation.

Critically, how are we to unite a nation which has in recent months seen youth clashing with police, jihadist attacks in the north east, herder attacking famers in the central belt, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, separatism in the south east, south west and kidnappings and corruption pretty much everywhere?

The Vice President has said: “If the political elite does not speak up, if we don’t see anything wrong in what is going on, if we allow it to continue to slide, we will endanger ourselves and endanger the future of our country.”
“I know that every conflict is a result of elite failure, the elite failure to speak up and tell the truth to their communities, that’s the cause of every one of these civil conflicts. So, I would urge that we speak up. I would urge that we stand for something. Sometimes it’s dangerous to stand for something. But the greater danger of course, is to keep quiet.”
But who is this political elite speaking up to? How are they speaking to them? And how do we ensure that those who are not part of this elite have the opportunity to talk back? How are ordinary Nigerians supposed to get involved in this conversation?

As the leader of a campaign to modernise democracy in Nigeria, I might be expected not to agree too much with one of our nation’s countless local monarchs – institutions many Nigerians believe to be an archaic and outdated relic of a bygone era.

But a recent interview with the Queen of Efik contained some interesting thoughts about how our democratic processes should adapt to the post-Covid world which really struck a chord with me.

In an interview with the BBC, the Queen argues that democratic bodies should continue to hold meetings remotely – even after the end of social distancing and restrictions on movement necessitated by the coronavirus crisis.
