Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society… Are You Afraid of the Dark? wasn’t just a show—it was a rite of passage.
Premiering on Nickelodeon in 1990, this Canadian-American anthology series quickly became a cornerstone of ‘90s kids’ TV. Each episode followed a group of teens—the Midnight Society—who gathered in the woods at night to tell spooky stories around a campfire. With every tale beginning with a handful of “midnight dust” and that iconic phrase, we knew we were in for something chilling, mysterious, and often deeply imaginative.
What made it stand out? The stories weren’t just jump-scare material. They were eerie, atmospheric, and often psychologically spooky—haunted houses, cursed objects, twisted fairytales, and supernatural creatures that felt just a bit too close to real. Many episodes ended on a subtly disturbing note that stuck with you long after the credits rolled.
Because every kid deserves to be just a little afraid of the dark.
