A single-storey sports pavilion, situated behind the indoor bowls club off Jubilee Way, was alight, sending plumes of black smoke high into the sky.

Local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed to avoid the fumes.

Fire crews from Surbiton, Kingston and Wimbledon attended after control officers were alerted to the incident at 4.54pm. They received 54 emergency calls about the incident.

The blaze was under control two hours later at 7.09pm.

Disaster strikes as FUSEBOX is flooded just days before the Creative Youth venue is due to host an international arts festival.

The cause of the flooding in the arts centre, located under John Lewis in Kingston, is being investigated, but it is thought a blocked pipe above the venue caused water to surge and toilets to overflow.

“This is quite literally an existential threat to the future of the charity and the important work it does helping young people find their voice both on and off the stage,” said Creative Youth’s Charlotte Levy, who thought the venue could be closed for the foreseeable future.

“While the festival will still go ahead at other venues, including the Rose Theatre and ACT Theatre [at Kingston College in Kingston Hall Road], the damage is a major blow.”

The good news is that 21 shows plus other events which include exhibitions, dance, music, cabaret and comedy, by performers and artists aged under 30 – a mixture of home-grown and global talent – will still go ahead in FUSE International, a nine-day festival running from this Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6.

A Hampton Court train was held outside the station as a stretcher was taken up the station steps by ambulance crew.

Developer Taylor Wimpey wants to build 150 homes on Green Belt land in Long Ditton – and it will be showcasing its plans at a pre-application consultation tomorrow (Thursday) at Surbiton Hockey Club.

The drop-in session between 3pm and 7.30pm at the club in Sugden Road, Long Ditton, is about its proposals for the 11-hectare site which includes Hill Park Roses nursery in Woodstock Lane North across to the very top of One Tree Hill – an area popular with dog walkers.

Taylor Wimpey says it’s a chance for the public to meet the project team, share their views and help shape the development before the company submits its planning application to Elmbridge Borough Council.

However many residents say the Green Belt should be protected from development.

Long Ditton Residents' Association vice chairman Mark Herbert said the group would continue to oppose ANY development on Green Belt land: “Our Green Belt provides a critical buffer between Greater London and the home counties. It does its job in preventing unchecked urban sprawl. We must protect and preserve it, once gone, it is gone forever.”
