Is there a better time of the year to visit a community garden?
The first hint of Autumn and a low afternoon sun is still shining in Pennard, Gower.

We were met by Charlotte Davies (CEO) and Mymuna Soleman (Chair of Trustees), who gave us a tour of the garden and a great insight into the project.
We also met with project workers Madeline, Renata and Chloe, who help the other volunteers and young people with the activities after school and during the school holidays.at the hall.

Hidden behind the Community Hall, is a beautiful garden. Tended by the volunteers and supported by the children from the local area. Growing Beetroot, Parsley, Mint, Coriander and Basil, along with a variety of other vegetables such as Carrots, Peas, Beans and Potatoes.
They have created a wonderfully biodiverse area that also teaches the children how to help tend and grow food. It includes a Bug Hotel as well as a small pond which uses a solar driven pump.

There is an Official Opening Event and Family Fun Day being held this Saturday 27 September 2025 between 12pm – 4pm. Come and join the fun with the community and help celebrate the completion of the Tyfu Pennard Community Garden.

Gwnaethom hefyd gwrdd â Madeline, Renata a Chloe, gweithwyr prosiect sy'n helpu'r gwirfoddolwyr a'r bobl ifanc eraill gyda'r gweithgareddau ar ôl yr ysgol ac yn ystod gwyliau'r ysgol, yn y neuadd.

Yn cuddio y tu ôl i'r neuadd gymunedol mae gardd hardd. Y gwirfoddolwyr sy’n gofalu am yr ardd gyda chefnogaeth gan blant yr ardal leol. Maent yn tyfu betys, persli, mintys, coriander a basil, ynghyd ag amrywiaeth o lysiau eraill fel moron, pys, ffa a thatws. Maent wedi creu ardal fioamrywiol ffyniannus sydd hefyd yn addysgu'r plant sut i helpu i ofalu am blanhigion a thyfu bwyd. Mae gwesty pryfed yn yr ardd yn ogystal â llyn bach sy'n defnyddio pwmp sydd wedi'i bweru gan yr haul.

Cynhelir digwyddiad agoriadol swyddogol a diwrnod hwyl i'r teulu ddydd Sadwrn 27 Medi 2025 rhwng 12pm a 4pm. Dewch i ymuno yn yr hwyl gyda'r gymuned a helpu i ddathlu cwblhau Gardd Gymunedol Tyfu Pennard.

We’re delighted to share that brand-new LED floodlights have now been installed on both our Touch and 3/4 pitches.

This major upgrade has been made possible thanks to £21,148.80 of UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) Grant funding, secured through the Rural Anchor - Swansea Fund.

The new LED heads, which replace the old metal halide lights, will not only provide a big improvement in lighting levels, but also deliver significant savings in energy usage, reduced carbon emissions, and lower future maintenance costs.

We are hugely grateful for this investment, which will not only benefit our players and coaches but also other community groups who use our facilities, such as Gower Dragons Touch Rugby team and Southgate Archery Club.

A huge thank you to Terrie Cousins and John Haslam for their hard work in securing this vital funding.

A huge package of help and support for young people, families and individuals in Swansea will again be in place this winter and charities and community groups can now apply for funding.

Swansea Council is making more than £600,000 available as part of its campaign to help those struggling with the cost of Christmas and winter, the school holidays or residents who are facing loneliness or isolation.

Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart said: "Once again we will be leading the way in Wales by supporting thousands of our residents this winter.

"There will be free food and shopping food vouchers available to ensure vulnerable families and children are able to get the food they need during the holidays, and we will make available warm and welcoming spaces for people who are feeling lonely or isolated so they can get together. We will also be providing support to our local food banks and other food providers through this period of high demand.

"There will be targeted help for families and individuals and a big programme of free and low cost events for younger and older people.

"This support will add to many other council-run initiatives including the return of free bus travel on certain dates in the run-up to Christmas and New year holiday periods, which can save a family of 4 up to £20 per day in travel costs."

Applications are now open for charities, community groups and clubs to apply for grants if they are running any of the following schemes:

*Free food for pupils during the school Christmas and half-term holidays.
*Swansea Spaces providing warm and welcoming places for people to socialise and take-part in activities.
*Emergency Food Aid via foodbanks and other community and charity initiatives tackling food poverty and food insecurity.
*Activities for young people and families at weekends and school holidays.
*Activities for older people during the winter.

Organisations can apply by visiting: https://www.swansea.gov.uk/winterwellbeinggrant

The deadline to apply is noon on Monday September 29 so that the grants can reach those organisations that have been successful in time for winter.

The bulk of the grants are being funded by the council with others funded by Welsh Government.

Council Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Alyson Anthony, said: "This funding makes a very real difference to thousands of people.

"In the last year alone around 100,000 meals were provided to pupils who may otherwise have gone without during the winter and summer holidays. This is in addition to direct funding for food banks and other emergency food providers.

"We will also be continuing to work hand in hand with the Cwtch Mawr Multibank which has provided close to a million new essential household items and clothing to people in the region since it launched last year.

"Once again there will also be targeted help in each council ward for residents at risk of going without via the councillor voucher scheme."

Council Cabinet Member for Community Support, Hayley Gwilliam, added: "We will again be supporting the network or Swansea Spaces which last year saw close to 80 venues offer inclusive and welcoming spaces for people to socialise.

"There is also a return of funding for groups and clubs to provide free and low cost activities for young people during the holidays and for residents within our Ageing Well community.

"By providing funding to our many partners we are maximising every bit of support we can provide to help people in communities across Swansea this winter."
