INTERVIEW with Gavan Holly
Belfast Celtic Young Men/Ladies/Cubs welcome, Gavan Holly to West Belfast in taking on a coaching/management role, alongside Declan Catney and Kevin Curran for the clubs 2014 side.
I caught up with Gavan as he attended his first training session last week (see image1), where he explained his reason for getting involved in coaching was down to a bad car crash, that damaged his back and forced him to hang up his boots. "I decided rather than spending my days as an unused sub, I'd have a go at coaching, and went on to achieving my UEFA B License and didn't look back".
You could see that this giant of a man was excited to be back, doing what he has done, and with great success. He watched the young team train, admiring their little feet dribbling a ball around in the pouring rain. (see image 2)
Holly has a wealth of knowledge and experience coaching and managing football teams. From u11 - u15 at Crusaders, u15, u16, u18 at Cliftonville, and Realta Na Cromige senior team, where he led them to winning the BDFL 1st division convincingly in his first season in charge. His coaching days have also taken him to Newry City Reserves, where he was Assistant Manager alongside Robbie Casey, also Gerry Flynn and Peter Murray (First Team Management).
Holly has indeed had many footballing highlights over the years, and when asked to share his greatest memory and achievement, he explained, "I have to say, winning the league with Realta would be a great memory, with a great bunch of lads, willing to fight for each other and challenge to a man all over the pitch. The best achievement for me, is helping coach young kids that have won Irish League titles, Irish Cups, represented their County teams and won silverware in the Milk Cup, as well as made the move to clubs in England and representing Northern Ireland at youth levels. As a coach we don't often get paid or much recognition, but when you see the end result of all those training sessions pay off, it makes it all worthwhile".
It is clear that with Holly's experience in coaching, he can add a lot to the West Belfast club. Declan Catney is very pleased to have him on board. Catney explained, "Gavan is an outstanding addition to the club, and will be a great asset in general. When he gets settled in, he will soon get to know our cubs, they are a great bunch of kids, who just love to play football. We wouldn't be the club we are today without them".
Holly is delighted to be involved, and looks positively towards a bright, green and white 2021.
