Here’s a peek at a big data cabling job we’ve been working on:

3 floors, 34 offices per floor, 2 cables per office.

That’s around 200 cables in total, feeding intercoms and Wi-Fi access points for up to 100 businesses.

Long runs, clean cabling and fast speeds. Just how we like it 😎

Why should you allow pets in the office?

1. According to research, pets - especially dogs - reduce stress.

2. Lower stress levels mean fewer stress-related illnesses. It's also great to have a reason to take a moment away from your screen (especially a cute, fluffy reason).

3. Having pets in the office can help boost morale and foster relationships between co-workers - do you really think we'd all be friends without this little guy? 😉

4. Employees who can bring their pets to work are happier, which is a good thing for them, you and the business itself (happier employees = higher productivity).

5. It's a low-cost perk that will make your business more attractive to potential applicants.

Here’s our office team enjoying some Paddy time - there's nothing like a furry friend to brighten your workday! 🐶

What is something your business couldn’t live without? 🫵

For us, it would be our apps.

We’ve built custom apps for our engineers to use out in the field – making everything more accessible to them while on site and reducing back-and-forth between the office and field teams.

They also take a chunk out of admin when it comes to producing surveys, reports and sign offs, as it’s all automated. When we told Office Coordinator (and resident Gen Z-er), Rona, that someone used to have to manually create all these documents, she couldn’t believe it.

Sure, it took some effort up front and there was a bit of a learning curve – but it’s made our lives so much easier! 😅

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re turning our attention to job burnout – more importantly, how to avoid it.

Things have been busy recently. The Weltel team is growing, we’ve been making new friends and starting on some big projects.

As much as we’re loving it, things can get a little overwhelming, so we’ve been making sure to prioritize our team's wellbeing by:

🏋‍♀️ Encouraging people to take advantage of the company-provided gym membership. We won't give you the whole shpiel about exercise - but really, it is good for you.

📵 Allowing people to fully switch off once the workday is done – no after-hours phone calls, thank you very much.

🗣️ Communication – if someone’s workload is too heavy, they tell us, and we listen. Constantly aiming for unachievable targets is stressful and pointless, so we realign our expectations of what is actually possible.

Feeling super appreciative of our wonderful team, old and new. Here’s to growing together, sustainably 🫶

Mental Health UK's Burnout Report 2024 reveals that 9 in 10 adults in the UK experiencing high or extreme stress in the past year and 1 in 5 needing to take time off work due to poor mental health caused by pressure or stress,

When you’re spending money, you want to know what’s going on. Which we think is fair enough.

That’s why we like to be open with our clients about our processes and the work we’re doing.

One thing customers rarely see is the careful consideration that goes into access point placement. So, to give you an idea, let’s take a look at our thought process when installing this AP in a private property...

🛜 Where is going to give the most coverage? At the end of the day, functionality is our top priority.

This access point is on a landing, placed in the middle of three bedrooms to ensure that they all get sufficient coverage.

👀 Aesthetics – is it going to look good? We aren’t going to spoil your feature wall by slapping an AP in the middle of it.

This was the most practical spot for this AP, and we could see that it wasn't going to be an eyesore (hurrah for UniFi's sleek design).

🔌 How accessible is the cabling route? Can we feasibly run a cable to that point – is there a simpler option that might save our client some money?

To this spot, we were able to easily run a cable through the attic, and avoid going through too many obstacles – which is where it can get time-consuming and expensive.

We are always going to make sure that we’re providing you with the best possible solution. At this install, we achieved fast and reliable speeds across all 3 bedrooms 🙌

Let’s talk about firestopping.

While it may be seemingly small aspect of telecoms, it's an absolute essential when cabling a fire-safe building.

Any time cables pass through walls, floors, or ceilings, they create pathways for fire, smoke and heat to spread.

That’s where firestopping comes in: properly sealing these gaps to help contain fire, protect people, and meet safety standards.

As a company that provides data cabling solutions, we feel it’s important that we offer a complete service – one that factors in fire safety.

That’s why we are fully accredited fire stoppers, trained and certified to carry out this vital work safely and professionally 👷🔥

Question time:

In 10 years, will we rely more on ultrafast fibre or 5G for our homes and businesses? 🤔

Fibre offers unmatched speeds, reliability and scalability - with rock-solid performance and consistently low latency.

The downside? The builds can take longer and are more resource-intensive.

5G, on the other hand, is mobile, fast to deploy, and delivers impressive speeds with low latency - when coverage is good.

But performance can vary, and shared cells mean it can be prone to network congestion.

So - what do you think the future has in store for us?

Project Spotlight: Fibre Installation in Grade 2 Listed Arcades with Ogi ⚡

A while back, we took on the challenge of bringing ultrafast fibre to Morgan Arcade and Royal Arcade, two Grade 2 listed arcades in Cardiff city centre. Our team carried out the full design, specification, and implementation, working at night so we didn't disturb visitors in the day - take a look at what we achieved 👇

🔭 The scope:

- Full fibre installation across both arcades.
- Provide high-speed connectivity to the shops inside, while preserving the historical character of the buildings.

📝 The numbers:

- 1.4 kilometres of cable
- 240 splices
- 8 fibre distribution points
- 110 customers served

🏆 What we achieved:

- Full Wi-Fi coverage within each shop.
- Discreet, high-speed fibre network.

Proud of this one!

The holiday has got us thinking back some of the most unexpected surprises we’ve encountered over the years – Easter eggs of the trade, you might say...

🩹 Duct tape & pray: Quick fixes that have somehow lasted for years. Fibre runs held up with zip ties and sheer hope.

🤔 Creative problem-solving: Cat5e cable terminated with a screwdriver, fibre runs duct-taped to water pipes, or ethernet run outdoors with zero weatherproofing and jointed with tape – yikes.

🤡 Cables with personality: One job had every single cable tagged with mystery names of previous employees instead of standard labels. Fun to find, not so fun to trace.

⏲️ Retro tech time capsules: Once found: a floppy disk taped inside a comms cabinet with handwritten config backups - oh, how we used to live.

What’s the most unorthodox thing you’ve come across on a job?

Pasg Hapus pawb / Happy Easter everybody! 🌼

In honour of World Heritage Day tomorrow... 🏰

This week, we've been at Roundhouse Farm Wales, the site of what are thought to be some of the last privately built defensive fortifications in Britain – the Nantyglo Roundhouses.

Built in 1816 by the owners of the Nantyglo Ironworks, these towers feature 4-ft thick walls and solid iron doors and were designed to protect the ironmasters from their workers in case of revolts.

Not something you come across every day on the job! ⚒️

We provided fully compliant, segregated Wi-Fi across four dwellings, using a mix of point-to-point links and wireless APs, all cabled neatly and discreetly.

We also fitted a brand new (and evidently much-needed) comms cabinet in the farmhouse, ready for when it welcomes future visitors.

It’s been fascinating to learn about this unique piece of Welsh history, and we’re proud to play a part in keeping historic sites like this connected – check out Roundhouse Farm WalesRoundhouse Farm Wales Airbnb's online!
