Shaldon Regatta has, and will, always be my favourite nine days of the year.
It’s full of a huge amount of events, days sitting on the beach, sandy fish and chips and a huge feeling of community and togetherness.
But reflecting on my childhood, I realise that it is more than that for me. Alongside all the fun, smiles and laughter there is a very solid routine.
For nine days, I have a limited wardrobe and almost zero decisions.
You will find me in shorts and either a Shaldon Regatta t-shirt or a Shaldon Allsorts t-shirt.
During rounders and volleyball you’ll find me by the sailing boats, but during netball on the wall. Rowing days are in front of the Beach Comber. And for swimming, kayaks and beach sports I’ll be representing the Committee.
Lunch will be a peanut butter roll, and ice cream will be bought from The Ness Gift Shop.
Every. Single. Year.
It’s only when we reflect that we realise quite how many things we were either drawn to, or unknowingly put into place, because that’s what our neurodiversity needed.
Understanding myself, my capacity and listening to my energy levels gives me the freedom to consciously put these things in place. And that is worth it’s weight in gold.
