When having a discussion with one of our members Roger the other day, about his beautiful collection of cars, and we were wondering what a collection of Jaguars would be called. He suggested a Clutch. What do you think? Any suggestions?

With many E-types tucked away for winter, now is the ideal time to tackle some of the indoor jobs that often get overlooked – starting with leather care.

Cold, damp weather can take its toll on seats and trim, even when the car isn’t being used. A gentle clean, followed by a good quality leather conditioner, helps keep the hide supple, prevents cracking, and restores some of that original richness these cars are known for.

It’s a satisfying job to do in the warmth of the garage or workshop, and it makes a noticeable difference to both appearance and longevity. Another small step in giving these wonderful cars the care they deserve during the quieter winter months.

The Maurice Project - The next stage was a full engine assessment carried out by Specialist Vehicle Services. The results were really positive. Compression across all six cylinders came in strong, indicating that the piston rings, bores and head gasket are all in good condition.

We also checked the oil pressure with a proper gauge, and even just on the starter motor it showed a healthy reading. A borescope inspection confirmed clean piston heads and clear honing marks, with very little carbon build-up, suggesting the engine has seen minimal use since it was last reconditioned.

All in all, the engine looks solid and won’t require a full rebuild, though it will still get a refresh when it comes out. Another encouraging step forward for the project, all helping to support the ongoing work of Provision House.

Winter Classic Car Storage: Our Top Tips

If you’re putting your E-type away for the winter, a little preparation now can save you a significant recommissioning bill in the spring. Here are some key points to help keep your classic safe, dry and in good condition over the colder months:

• Service first – Check and top up all fluids before laying the car up.
• Clean and dry – Give the car a full valet and ensure the interior, particularly carpets, is completely dry.
• Remove any hidden rubbish – Check under seats, in pockets and in the boot for anything that could rot or attract pests.
• Fill the fuel tank – A full tank helps prevent condensation; a fuel stabiliser can also be used.
• Park facing out – This makes battery access and any jump-starting easier.
• Use a battery conditioner – Keeps the battery healthy and ready for spring.
• Handbrake off – Leave the car in gear (or ‘P’) and check tyre pressures.
• Vent the interior – Leave the driver’s window slightly open to prevent condensation build-up.
• Block entry points – B**g exhaust pipes and cover air intakes to deter pests.
• Check the car monthly – Inspect tyres, the battery, under the bonnet and interior; start the car and run it to temperature if possible.
• Leave a reminder list – Note tyre pressures, battery connections, exhaust bungs and other items to reverse before driving.

If you have declared the car SORN, remember to remove the SORN before driving, and ensure MOT, tax and insurance are all current.

Preparing your classic properly now will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable first outing in the spring.

The Maurice Project - Front Suspension Strip-Down Update

With the front wheels off and the engine frame safely supported, we started work on the front brakes and suspension. After bleeding the front brake system, we removed the calipers, disconnected the track rod end, released the upper and lower ball joints, took out the shock absorber, anti-roll bar link and finally unloaded the torsion bar to free the hub assembly.

Both upper and lower wishbones were then removed to complete the strip-down.

On inspection, the upper ball joint, lower ball joint and track rod end were all badly worn — no wonder the steering must have felt vague!

Thanks to our friends at SNG Barratt Group, a full set of new bushes and ball joints is on its way, so the front-end refresh can begin.
