What a fantastic evening we had at Sarastro restaurant! It’s been many years since our last visit, so it was wonderful to see a return of our long-standing XK and E-type members, as well as to welcome those joining us for the first time.

The restaurant’s famous quirky décor and lively atmosphere never disappoint, and the jazz singer on the night made it even more special. It truly was an evening of great food, great company, and plenty of laughter.

We enjoyed it so much that we’re already planning another visit for next year—watch this space!

When psychiatrist and author Dr Raj Persaud was asked if his Series 3 V12 E-type Jaguar could star in a Dunhill fashion shoot, he didn’t hesitate — though he admits he worried more about the car starting than the models striking their poses!

The setting was Somerset House, where the E-type quickly stole the limelight from a line-up of immaculate male models. Even the breakdown man who turned up later asked to stay just to admire it.

The shoot became a love-letter to British style — Dunhill, the E-type, and a touch of classic eccentricity.

You can read Dr Persaud’s full, wonderfully told account — complete with hot-start dramas, scarf choreography, and a reflection on what the E-type still represents today — in the next issue of the magazine.

Looking back to summer and the Classic & Retro Car Show at Himley Hall…

The Maurice Project team had an early start that day, collecting the car from the Institute of Technology and setting up their display at the show. With help from Mel Deakin (and his trusty van and trailer), they arrived in good time and were given a prime spot where every car entering the grounds passed by.

The response was fantastic — plenty of interest in both the E-type and the community project behind it. They even discovered several other E-type restorations underway in the Midlands — clearly the place to be for enthusiasts!

Even when the rain arrived, it only brought more people under cover with us, and more chances to share the story of “Maurice”.

Richard and Victoria Nicholl recently returned from an excellent tour of Northern Spain.
Club member, John Osborne, has written a report for the Club magazine which will be published soon.
This photograph was taken by Victoria Nicholl on the high plains of northern Spain before the hairpin descent back to Santander.

We think it epitomises what the E-types are all about: being on the road.

The Maurice Project recently welcomed some young visitors to the workshop. Under careful supervision, they helped remove the standing pillars and even tried their hands at the blasting cabinet. A small but proud step in keeping engineering skills — and enthusiasm for the E-type — alive for the future.

So, while the British guys were watching the E-types racing in the rain at the Goodwood Revival, the Oil Leakers were driving around Colorado enjoying mostly sunny weather. Pictures were sent in by our Californian Representative, Glen Barker, which were taken by Les Hamilton.

Modification of classic cars is becoming increasingly popular as drivers look to improve safety, reliability and even speed. The Series 3 V12 lends itself well to some modernising and although this one looks very standard on the outside, it’s very different on the inside! Strombergs have been replaced by Electronic Fuel Injection, the distributor replaced by a wasted spark system and the brains of the car now sit within an ECU.
Whether it’s uprated brakes, a 5 spd gearbox, stainless 4 pipe exhaust, LED lighting or an aluminium cooling system running waterless coolant there are plenty of companies in the U.K. developing solutions to bring your classic car into the 21st century - a modern classic if you will.
In addition to all of the above this member’s car has recently been fitted with a Plenum air handling solution designed by marque specialists P&K Thornton, Nottingham.
Owner Richard McHowat says “if you want to keep younger generations interested in the E-type then showing what can be done to make the car more reliable, safer and handle better but at the same time still look as it did when it was built, this is one way of doing it”
