πŸ’” Tribute to DJ Charlie Washington πŸ’”

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and fellow DJ, Charlie Washington.

Charlie was a brilliant house DJ from New Jersey who brought his energy and passion to the FutureFMlive airwaves late at night, right up until last year. Many of our listeners will remember tuning into his sets β€” always vibrant, always uplifting, and always shared with love.

Beyond the music, Charlie was a true supporter of our station and our team. Even when times were difficult for him, he would still check in, always ready to help however he could. That generosity of spirit is something we will never forget.

We’d like to share with you one of the last shows Charlie did for us, uploaded on Mixcloud β€” a reminder of the talent and joy he brought to so many. 🎢✨

Thank you, Charlie, for the music, the memories, and your friendship.

You will always be part of the FutureFMlive family.

Rest easy, Grumpps. πŸ•ŠοΈβ€οΈ

In 1979, the world witnessed the rise of the 2Tone movement, a cultural phenomenon that blended music, fashion, and social activism. Emerging from the UK, 2Tone was both a musical genre and a subculture that brought together the sound of ska, reggae, and punk rock. The 2Tone ska revival, led by bands like The Specials, Madness, and The Selecter, was characterized by upbeat rhythms, brass sections, and politically charged lyrics. The movement became a symbol of unity in a time of division, breaking down racial and social barriers through music that appealed to both black and white youth. The scene quickly grew, with young fans adopting its distinctive style, including sharp suits, black-and-white checkered patterns, and, of course, the iconic Doc Martens boots.

By 1979, the subcultures surrounding skinheads, rudeboys, and suedeheads had intertwined with the 2Tone movement, creating a unique blend of style and music. The skinhead culture, which had originated in the early 1960s as a working-class youth movement in Britain, was revived with a modern twist through the 2Tone era. Suedeheads, a subgroup of skinheads, took a more fashion-forward approach to the style, often incorporating tailored suits and suede shoes. As the movement grew, scooter rallies became a major part of the 2Tone lifestyle, with fans customizing their Lambrettas and Vespas to reflect their individuality and allegiance to the ska scene. These scooters became a symbol of the freedom and rebellion that defined the era.

The 2Tone subculture of 1979 had a lasting impact on the youth culture of the late 20th century. Its music and fashion influenced generations to come, contributing to the resurgence of ska and reggae in the 1980s and beyond. The spirit of 2Tone lives on today in modern-day ska bands, fashion trends, and scooter culture. As young people continue to look to the past for inspiration, the 2Tone movement remains a defining moment in both British music history and youth culture worldwide. With its powerful message of unity, the movement transcended its time and left a lasting legacy in both the musical and cultural landscape.
