Why is this Spitfire wearing American markings?
RW382 is painted in the colours of “Porky II”, a Spitfire flown by Lt. Robert Connor of the USAAF’s 309th Fighter Squadron in 1944.
The scheme honours the deep American connection with East Anglia during WW2, when thousands of US airmen were based across Britain.

It also feels especially fitting here at North Weald, where American volunteers of the RAF Eagle Squadrons once flew before the United States officially entered the war.

A powerful reminder this Memorial Day of the shared history, sacrifice, and friendship forged across the Atlantic 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Was R. J. Mitchell really the “designer of the Spitfire”? Or has history simplified the story?

Born on this day in 1895, Mitchell was the visionary lead designer behind the Spitfire at Supermarine - but the aircraft was also shaped by a wider team of engineers and designers, including Joseph Smith and the colleagues who carried the project forward after Mitchell’s death in 1937.

One thing’s undeniable though:
the Spitfire became an icon.

Elegant lines. That unmistakable sound. A silhouette recognised around the world.

So what do you think - does one man deserve the credit for a legend like the Spitfire? ✈️

On the night of 16–17th May 1943, 617 Squadron RAF carried out one of the most daring missions of the Second World War: Operation Chastise.

19 Lancaster bombers took off into the darkness, flying at just 60 feet over enemy territory with a weapon never before used in combat. Only 11 returned.

This footage is a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the crews who flew the legendary Dambusters raid.

We remember them.

There’s something timeless about a Spitfire in flight. Six years ago, I started this account with one goal: to help keep history alive.

Since then, this community has grown beyond anything I ever imagined - millions reached, countless stories shared, and proof that these aircraft and the people behind them still matter deeply.

Thank you for being part of the journey. Here’s to many more stories to come.

81 years after VE Day.
15 Spitfires.7 Hurricanes.
The sound of Merlin engines still stops people in their tracks.
A tribute to the generation who fought for freedom - and to the aircraft that became symbols of it.
(And no… this isn’t AI, it’s the unforgettable finale of last year’s Battle of Britain Airshow at Duxford 🇬🇧).
